Cellular Coverage Expanded in Cariboo Supporting Tourism Growth & Safety
The BCHA, along with our tourism counterparts, have advocated for expanded cellular service across British Columbia to support with traveller safety and access to services. The Government of BC announced today that cellular coverage is now available for the community of Wells, northwest of Barkerville, bringing safer driving conditions to that section of Highway 26 and the Jack-of-Clubs rest area. Cellular coverage means the community of Wells and people travelling along the six-kilometre stretch of Highway 26 in the Cariboo will have access to voice, data and emergency 911 services.

This is an important step to ensure tourism growth and safety in remote communities across BC.
Province Seeks Input on Making National Day of Truth & Reconciliation a Provincial Stat Holiday
The Province is seeking input from B.C. employers and employees on whether the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation (September 30) should be designated a provincial statutory holiday under the Employment Standards Act, starting in 2023.

Designating this day as a provincial statutory holiday would entitle B.C. employees covered by the Employment Standards Act to an employer-paid day off to personally commemorate the day, or to payment at premium rates if they are required to work on that day. Submit feedback by September 21, 2022.
BCRTS Tourism Impact Survey Report
The BC Regional Tourism Secretariat (BCRTS) released the final BC COVID-19 Tourism Impact Survey 2020-2021 Report, which summarizes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on BC's visitor economy from April 2020 to December 2021. Based on survey responses from our sector, the BCRTS developed recommendations on how to best navigate future crises which include:
  • For Industry:
  • Digitalization and fully developed outreach programs are essential to relief program success.
  • Insurance solutions specifically tailored by industry would provide greater protection for industry members during times of crisis.
  • Recommendations for government and other policymakers include:
  • There exists a need to develop scenario analysis and crisis management plans for future crises.
  • Access to government-backed credit would increase the coping abilities of the most affected firms in times of crisis.
  • Programs that are designed to support individuals create distortions for industry when they penalize workers that choose to continue working in the service sector.

Big White’s Freeride Days Mountain Bike Festival a Huge Success!

Big White Ski Resort’s largest summer event to date, the Freeride Days Mountain Bike Festival, took place this past weekend and was a huge success. Beginning August 4, the 3-day long event saw over 3,000 of spectators, dozens of professional and aspiring mountain bike athletes.

“After two years without crowds, we are ecstatic with how the event went over,” said Trevor Hanna, Vice President of Hospitality, Big White Ski Resort Ltd. “We had a fantastic team of employees and volunteers who put in many long hours to make Freeride Days a success, and I think it was evident from the number of people who showed up to watch that this will continue to be a popular summer event in the Okanagan for years to come.”
