BCHA Applauds Federal Tourism Growth Strategy for Driving Economic Recovery and Sustainable Development

Dear BC Hotel Community,

The British Columbia Hotel Association (BCHA) is thrilled with the Government of Canada's new Federal Tourism Growth Strategy, titled Canada 365: Welcoming the world. Every day. This comprehensive strategy aligns closely with the BCHA's recommendations and underscores the pivotal role of tourism in the Canadian economy.

The BCHA is delighted to see elements of ours and the Hardest Hit Coalitions' recommendations incorporated, particularly in the areas of recruitment and retention, infrastructure investments, sustainable workforce development, and event asset enhancement.

Notably, the establishment of the Federal Ministerial Tourism Growth Council, bringing together ministers from various relevant departments, promises cross-departmental collaboration and expedited progress on vital policy issues. With a strong focus on workforce challenges, the strategy recognizes the value and potential of the tourism workforce, aiming to enhance skills, promote diversity and inclusion, and streamline immigration processes.

The BCHA remains committed to working closely with the Government of Canada and other industry stakeholders to support the successful implementation of the Federal Tourism Growth Strategy, ensuring British Columbia and Canada thrive as premier destinations, contributing to economic recovery and benefiting both local communities and visitors alike.

Stats Canada Releases New Data on Impacts of Short-Term Rentals (STRs)

A recent report from Stats Canada provided evidence that private short-term rentals (STRs) have witnessed significant growth in British Columbia's accommodation services subsector. According to data from AirDNA and Statistics Canada, the revenue share of private STRs within the subsector has more than doubled from 7.0% in 2017 to 15.2% in 2021 at the national level. Prince Edward Island had the highest share of revenue claimed by private STRs, reaching 29.9% in 2021. British Columbia followed closely with a 20.0% share. The COVID-19 pandemic further influenced trends as STRs expanded their revenue share in markets outside larger metropolitan areas.

The report also indicates that shifts are likely to subside with the return of pre-pandemic travel patterns and the enforcement of new regulations which the BCHA continues to aggressively advocate for to also free up our province's housing supply. We will continue to keep our members updated on our efforts.
