Okanagan Hospitality Community Connects at KMHA Luncheon

Last week, BCHA President and CEO, Ingrid Jarrett, had the honor of joining the Kelowna Hotel Motel Association (KMHA) luncheon at the Hyatt Place Kelowna, where she connected with the vibrant Okanagan hospitality community. During the event, updates were shared on key advocacy issues such as short-term rentals, strategic updates, and workforce concerns. The gathering also provided an opportunity for meaningful discussions on industry pace and business. The BCHA extends its gratitude to the KMHA for hosting this valuable event and for fostering dialogue among our dedicated members. We look forward to continued engagement with accommodators across the province.

ADVOCACY WIN! Visa Exemptions for Known-Travellers

Today, Minister Sean Fraser announced visa exemptions for known-travellers from 13 countries, including the Philippines and Morocco. This move not only promotes international tourism but also streamlines the hiring process for Temporary Foreign Workers, reducing obstacles for employers. Starting June 6th, 2023, individuals who have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years or possess a US visitor visa will be eligible for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). This advancement is a significant step towards addressing the labor shortage in our sector that the BCHA has continued to advocate for. We will continue to work with the government to enhance access to international workers.

Progress in Affordable Housing File | BC Government Sets Housing Targets in 10 Municipalities

The BCHA has been working closely with the Provincial Government on creating solutions to support access to affordable housing -- aside from advocating for fair regulations and reporting on short-term vacation rentals, we have identified the need to create access to housing to house employees. We are pleased to see the government has announced the first 10 municipalities where housing targets will be set. Over summer 2023, the province will consult with these municipalities and set final housing targets. All communities will be encouraged to take the steps needed to expedite local processes -- be it updating zoning bylaws or streamlining local development approval processes. When the targets are set, the province will monitor progress and support the municipalities in addressing barriers. This is a great step in the right direction.

ADVOCACY WIN! Funding Boosts Rural Regional Transportation

The BCHA has been a strong advocate for the delivering transportation improvements as noted in our tourism growth strategy submission. The Province has announced funding to support safe and affordable regional transportation in rural communities of Northern BC. With a $5 million contribution to the Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT), the BC Bus North and Northern Community Shuttle Program will continue until 2026-27. This funding ensures the continuity of vital transit services, connecting rural residents to regional centers through community shuttles. Additionally, the Province has allocated $2.5 million for regional engagement and analysis of rural inter-city transportation, in collaboration with NDIT and other economic trusts.
