Bill 10 Receives Royal Assent
|
|
On June 2nd, 2022, Bill 10 - 2022: Labour Relations Code Amendment Act, 2022 received Royal Assent, officially marking its affect. Under the new amendments, the BC Labour Relations Code allows single-step certification of unions where the union can demonstrate support of 55% or more of the bargaining unit.
This is not the first time BC has operated under a single-step certification regime. A two-step certification process has been in place in BC since 2001, but historically, the province has alternated between single and two-step certification processes. Single-step certification simplifies the process, making it easier for unions to become certified.
Under the new regime:
- If 55% or more of employees in a workplace indicate their intent to unionize by signing union membership cards, a union will be certified and no further vote is required.
- If between 45% and 55% of employees sign union membership cards, a second step consisting of a representation (secret ballot) vote is required and a majority must vote in favour of representation by the union for certification.
We understand the impact this will have on our members. We encourage our members to reach out to our team directly should they have any questions at communications@bcha.com.

BCHA Energy Specialist, Dylan Tomlin, Wins FortisBC Energy Specialist Program Award!
The BCHA couldn't be happier to share that our very own Energy Specialist, Dylan Tomlin, has won the Achievement in Energy Efficiency Goals Award by FortisBC!
Many of you have come to know Dylan through our GoGreen program. Over the past two years, Dylan has worked directly with properties across BC, assessing their current energy efficiencies and outlining opportunities for cost-savings and energy conservation.
This award is a result of that important work, as Dylan was able to surpass our initial goal of 50 energy assessment/reports, going far beyond the expectations of his role.
We are so proud to have Dylan as part of our team and celebrate this substantial win!
