BCHA Pushes Workforce Priorities

BCHA President and CEO, Ingrid Jarrett, recently met with Minister François-Philippe Champagne, Federal Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry; BC Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin; and Neil Fassina, President of Okanagan College. The meeting provided an opportunity to address the workforce challenges affecting our sector. We emphasized the disproportionate labor shortage in our industry compared to others, with approximately 360,000 positions (nationally) to be filled this summer. We highlighted the need for adjustments in the immigration system to recognize this significant gap and urged the government to take responsibility. As short-term solutions, we proposed the implementation of a bridge program called Destination Employment to facilitate the integration of new Canadians into high-demand sectors. Additionally, we suggested a Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program that addresses seasonal employment, drawing inspiration from successful models in countries like France and Spain. We will continue to keep our members updated on the impact of these ongoing conversations.

BIV: BC Hotel Association Strikes Sustainability Partnerships

Following the exciting launch of the BCHA Sustainability Playbook, Glen Korstrom, journalist at Business In Vancouver, interviewed BCHA President and CEO, Ingrid Jarrett to explore how the playbook, along with our strategic partnerships with both Biosphere Tourism and the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance will help support our accommodation sector.

Addressing Canada's Labour Shortage: A Need for Skill-Matching

A recent StatsCan study highlights the cause of Canada's labour shortage: a mismatch of skills, education, and pay with job opportunities. The current immigration system, prioritizing post-secondary education, overlooks the potential of candidates with a high-school education or less. With nearly 500,000 vacant jobs in this category and only 300,000 unemployed Canadians meeting the requirements, addressing the labour shortage solely with domestic candidates is inadequate. A modernized and flexible immigration system that strategically matches newcomers to opportunities is crucial. This would benefit businesses and job seekers and make significant progress in resolving the labour crisis.
