BC's Growth Forecast Drops to 1% for 2023, but Deficit Projection Improves

British Columbia's economic growth forecast for 2023 has been revised down to one per cent from the earlier prediction of 1.2 per cent by the Ministry of Finance. The second quarterly report indicates a further slowdown in economic growth to 0.7 per cent for the following year. However, the deficit projection has improved, with this year's deficit now expected to be $5.6 billion, down from the previous estimate of $6.7 billion in September. The ministry attributes these adjustments to global economic challenges and elevated interest rates in Canada. Finance Minister Katrine Conroy acknowledges the impact of global inflation and high housing costs on people's budgets and assures continued government support to alleviate everyday financial pressures.

The Third Quarterly Report is scheduled for release on Feb. 22, 2024, alongside Budget 2024.
