BCHA's Successful Pilot Program with Venue Series Fuels Group Sales Growth 

One of the most important member connections that the BCHA team performs is to be in-market around the province meeting with hotels about their day-to-day business needs. In recent weeks our team has been in places such as Invermere, Penticton, Surrey, Kelowna, Victoria, and Vancouver Island with a few more stops to come before year’s end. These visits have uncovered training, development, and research opportunities for BCHA to deliver back to members as well as providing the vital act of listening to operator’s concerns. 


It was one of these visits earlier in 2023 that launched the idea for BCHA to represent hotels that are looking for more group and conference business. Our team heard the business concern and acted immediately to provide both a needed service but also a strong value proposition to members.


THE SOLUTION: capitalizing on the skills of existing team members, we designed a group sales representation service through a marketplace vendor called Venue Series. This initiative aimed to channel group sales to participating properties and connect them directly with interested meeting planners.


I was joined by our Member Services Manager, Samantha Glennie and we participated in events held across Seattle, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver. We represented six inaugural partners: Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Resort & Conference Centre, The Beach Club Resort, Old House Hotel, Crown Isle Resort and Golf Community, The Cove Lakeside Resort, and Fairmont Hot Springs Resort.


THE RESULTS: Over 150 meeting planners were exposed to our participating locations, with 65 one-on-one meetings, eliciting an exceptional response. Planners expressed willingness to explore new locations, and provided reasonable solutions to travel and accessibility concerns. Our participating properties have been very pleased with the immediate results. Supporting your business each and every day is a passion for our team and this program embodies the BCHA's commitment to empowering members' business growth.

BCHA's Board Members Advocate for Change in Ottawa on Hill Day!

Today, BCHA Board Directors Tanya Stroinig and Samantha Hackett were in Ottawa for Hill Days, an exclusive annual event that facilitated in-person meetings with Parliamentarians and federal department officials. With close to 50 meetings on the books, led by the Hotel Association of Canada, Tanya and Samantha were part of many critical conversations had to support the hotel sector's growth at the federal level. Thank you to HAC, Samantha, Tanya, and every other participating Canadian hotleier for giving a united voice for our sector!

BCHA Delivers Updates at WCLC

Last week, BCHA's Ingrid Jarrett and Kelsey Millman joined the Western Canadian Lodging Conference at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver. Ingrid provided updates on our advocacy and resources, and moderated a panel on "Development and Operating Cost Management" with fellow hoteliers Jeff Cury, Senior Director, Development Canada at Hilton; Philippe Gadbois, Senior Vice President, Operations at Atlific Hotels; and Don Lougheed, Regional VP, Sales & Franchise Operations, Canada at Hyatt. It was a day filled with networking, connections, and growth. We're excited to continue the momentum at our 2024 Summit in Whistler, May 1-2, 2024.

BCHA's Director of Operations, Michael Macleod, had the pleasure of connecting with accommodation operators in the beautiful Kootenay region during the recent Kootenay Rockies Tourism Association AGM. This fantastic event provided a platform to share exciting updates on the advocacy initiatives that BCHA is spearheading. Now in Effect | BC's Pay Transparency Act: More Transparent Job Postings Now Required

Under BC's Pay Transparency Act, employers in British Columbia are now required to include salary or wage information in all publicly posted job listings. This new law prohibits employers from requesting pay history information from job applicants and from penalizing employees who share their pay with colleagues or potential applicants. This legislation aims to address the gender pay gap, with women in BC earning 17% less than men, disproportionately affecting Indigenous women, visible minority women, and immigrant women. Large and medium-sized employers will also need to publicly report their gender-pay gap. These requirements will be introduced in phases to allow employers time to adapt, with regulations refined annually based on employer feedback.
