BC United Shares Proposed Amendments to Bill 35 |
Following the introduction of landmark legislation on STRs last week which included the BCHA's four key recommendations, today, BC United MLA Karin Kirkpatrick, who serves as the Opposition Critic for Housing, proposed four amendments for Bill 35, the Short-Term Rental Accommodations Act, which are included below:
- Exempting accommodation for travel related to medical procedures such as cancer treatment
- Establishing a “designated major event accommodation area” to be exempt during major events like FIFA 2026 or the Grey Cup – with the intent to avoid surges in black market rentals
- Capping STRs to a person’s principal residence plus one other residence that is not a primary residence
- Defining STRs as 30 days or less instead of 90 days in order to support nurses, doctors, students, and construction workers
The BCHA is actively following these proposed changes and will continue to keep our members updated.
