Update on Short-Term Vacation Rental | Advocacy Next Steps

Dear accommodation members,

I am writing to share a significant update regarding the BCHA's efforts on our short-term vacation rental (STVR) advocacy file, which our members identified as a top priority in our Spring survey.

Over the past year, the BCHA has been working diligently in close collaboration with our industry partners and government officials to advance our advocacy priorities related to short-term vacation rentals--curating groundbreaking research, creating an industry toolkit to empower our members with our message, and engaging government on proven solutions. Our aim? To expand affordable housing availability to support our workforce and level the playing field for accommodation operators throughout the province.

As part of our advocacy strategy, we will be hosting an important advocacy impact session on Thursday, Sept. 21st from 10am to 11am PST, with Canada's leading STVR experts.

During this session, we will unveil groundbreaking research findings that shed light on the impacts of the short-term rental industry, showcase the STVR landscape across BC and Canada, and share the next steps for our efforts. The lack of access to affordable housing caused by STVRs has a ripple effect that impacts every business and British Columbian; and as we have seen from other jurisdictions around the world (most recently New York), action needs to be taken.

As we forge ahead with our next steps, your voice will be instrumental so this session is not to be missed. Please click here to register.

I also want to take the opportunity to remind you of our Virtual Event taking place tomorrow, Sept. 13 at 1pm. We are delighted to welcome leaders from provincial hotel associations from across Canada. I will be facilitating the panel as we explore topics such as workforce challenges, provincial trends, obstacles, tourism growth strategies, and much more. Register here.

Kind regards,

Ingrid Jarrett

Fueling Group Sales Growth | BCHA Announces Program with Venue Series

Following member feedback from market visits last winter and spring, the BCHA identified group sales growth as a priority for certain regions and property types. To support this need, the BCHA is thrilled to announce a pilot program, in partnership with Venue series—known for connecting buyers with unique venues, aligning with our participating hotels and resorts. The goal of the program is to drive group sales business to participating properties and connect them directly with interested meeting planners. Our first event is this week, featuring six inaugural partners: Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Resort & Conference Centre, The Beach Club Resort, Old House Hotel, Crown Isle Resort and Golf Community, The Cove Lakeside Resort, and Fairmont Hot Springs Resort. Stay tuned for results this fall.

Industry Engagement in Quesnel: MRDT and Advocacy Initiatives

Last week, BCHA President and CEO, Ingrid Jarrett, embarked on an industry engagement session in Quesnel. During this visit, she discussed regional opportunities, addressed workforce needs, and clarified the hotel's role in the MRDT process initiated on May 1, 2023. We express our gratitude to the engaged Quesnel operators for their valuable feedback. If you have any questions regarding your MRDT collection process, please don't hesitate to reach out to the BCHA. Additionally, Ingrid also met with Dave Jorgenson from Wells, BC, to discuss advocacy concerning a the proposed mine. While a mine could significantly boost the town's economy, careful consideration is essential to ensure it's location doesn't compromise the historic town's historic authenticity, a vital tourism driver. We eagerly anticipate further advocacy efforts in collaboration with Kootenay Rockies Tourism and TIABC on this matter.
