June Success Story
Eighty-seven year-old, “Ada”, lives with her partner of over 40 years and his disabled adult child. The Ordinance Violation case filed against her had been open for four years when Indy Legal Aid got involved and the Court was considering an order to vacate.

Ada had a very difficult issue with hoarding and was unable to resolve it on her own. To make the situation worse, Ada had nine indoor cats that were not adequately cared for. Community partners worked together so that Ada could remain in her home. Fortunately, NeighborLink went to Ada's home numerous times to help clean and organize her possessions.

The Marion County Health Department Inspector assigned to the case met with our Indy Legal Aid attorney to go over a list of tasks that had to be accomplished to make the home safe. A cleaning company did a deep clean of Ada's house after it was organized and decluttered. The Executive Director of Indy Neighborhood Cats met with Ada after speaking with our attorney. The Executive Director and Ada picked six cats to rehome. As difficult as it was for Ada to let go of her beloved cats, she knew they would be safe and receive good care from Indy Neighborhood Cats.

Indy Neighborhood Cats was even able to provide emergency medical care for one of the felines. This was a situation that if not resolved, would have been tragic for Ada. Instead, Ada is able to live in a home that is clean and safe. Ada is able to remain with her loved ones and three of her pets, which will enhance her well-being.
Indy Legal Aid Receives Two-Year Grant from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute
Indy Legal Aid is pleased to announce that we have received a fourth two-year Victims of Crime Act grant from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) for our Legal Advocacy & Support for Underserved Victims program.

This grant will allow us to increase the availability of free legal assistance to victims of domestic violence to help them achieve safety and stability, and enhance their life skills. Indy Legal Aid will provide assistance in civil court proceedings and referrals to partner agencies providing mental health, housing, and other services.

While violence does not discriminate, low-income individuals may be disproportionately affected by domestic violence, elder abuse, and child abuse because they lack the knowledge and available resources to stop the violence and the legal help to extricate themselves from abusive situations.

"In the past year, we have seen an increase in the number of seniors and the disabled who are coming to us for assistance," said John Floreancig, Indy Legal Aid General Counsel and CEO. "We are extremely grateful for ICJI's continued support of our program."
