Why is a Facility Master Plan Needed?

Stephen Hall, Chief Communications Officer, delivers a message about the Facility Master Plan.

What Does the Data Show?

SPS enrollment is projected to decline by approximately 14 percent

to roughly 19,000 students by 2035.

With more than 60 school buildings, SPS currently has the

capacity to serve more than 30,000 students.

National trends like shifting enrollment patterns, lower birth rates, expanding educational options and other factors are resulting in declining school enrollment. Since 2019, SPS enrollment has declined by more than 9 percent. Currently, SPS has an enrollment of approximately 22,215 students in grades K-12.

Aging infrastructure, rising costs and decreasing funding will also impact how SPS utilizes and invests in its school buildings over the next 10 years. It is likely that all these factors combined will contribute to the need to consolidate and/or close some schools that are underutilized and/or have low condition scores.

Share Your Input

Decisions about how SPS invests in and utilizes schools will impact future generations of students.

The goal of this process is to engage the entire SPS community in developing a collective vision that guides how SPS uses available resources to maximize the educational experience for all students in the future.

Next Steps

Data and input gathered from the community, facility planning experts and the Facility Master Plan Advisory Council will be used to develop a report that will be presented to the Board of Education in December 2026.

During Spring 2027, the Board of Education will review and adopt a Facility Master Plan and may appoint a Community Task Force on Facilities to help evaluate and prioritize facility needs, similar to the process used in 2019 and 2023.

Stay engaged in the process by frequently visiting sps.org/facilitymasterplan for updates and additional opportunities to engage in the coming months. You can also sign up to receive updates by email here.
