Dear KCU Community,

Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) identified a new coronavirus variant, Omicron (B.1.1.5290), and classified it as a Variant of Concern. The emergence of Omicron reminds us that we still must remain vigilant in our efforts to keep each other safe. Initial analysis of this new variant has revealed over thirty mutations on the spike protein alone which could potentially increase the virus’s infectivity, transmissibility and ability to evade current immune defenses.

Past variants have proven to be unpredictable in the early stages raising the need for our continued vigilance in our efforts to reduce the risks to exposure. While it is too early to know for certain what the impact of Omicron will be, its emergence raises the need for caution, once again prompting governments to reinstitute travel bans on international travel.

As we approach the upcoming winter break, please be aware that there is an increased probability of disruptions to international travel plans due to possible border closures and restrictions on international flights. Based on the global response to previous Variants of Concern, it would be advisable to reconsider all non-essential international travel if possible. Admittedly, adjusting or canceling these non-essential travel plans is a difficult decision. However, it may provide the best course of action for ensuring your overall well-being as well as your ability to return to KCU at the conclusion of winter break.

If you elect to embark on international travel, please be sure you monitor the U.S. Department of State and CDC websites and be prepared for the potential for disruptions to your travel plans. FAQs surrounding travel and the coronavirus are also available via the CDC’s website.

Despite the concerns regarding the new variant, all evidence to date continues to support vaccination as the best defense against infection and severe illness leading to hospitalization. Please refer to additional information on COVID-19 vaccines and national resources. If anytime during the break, you would like to obtain a COVID-19 test, you can find free testing sites in Missouri and across the country.

KCU will continue to monitor coronavirus developments both domestically and abroad. Watch for up-to-date messaging on a new coronavirus information page on the KCU website that will be complete within the next few weeks. A communication with information on how to access that page will be forthcoming.

Please remain vigilant and continue to execute and advocate for the health practices that will keep our community safe.
Sincerely,

Carlton Abner, DNP, RN-BC
