Good afternoon,
We hope you are enjoying the late summer weather and are looking forward to the Fall 2023 term. In advance of the Fall term, we wanted to share some updates and reminders from the Office of Academic Affairs.
Updates to DP Planner to Show New General Education Information
DP Planner has been updated to include the 2023 General Education guidelines. Undergraduate students are required to follow either the 2010 General Education Requirements or the 2023 General Education Framework based on criteria outlined on the General Education Resource Page. If a student is required to complete the 2010 Gen Ed Requirements, DP Planner will function exactly as it has previously. If a student is required to complete the 2023 Gen Ed Framework, only 2023 Gen Ed attributes will be visible and automatically imported for SUNY Empire courses, transcript credits and credit by evaluation. A new and different General Education document will be displayed for these students. The DP Planner update for the 2023 General Education Framework is effective as of August 16, 2023. Please see the knowledgebase article “DP Planner and General Education” for screenshots and more details.
Change to the Degree Works Petition Submission Process
The Office of the Registrar, in conjunction with the Office of Information Technology, have developed a new Petition Submission form to request changes to a Degree Works audit for students in the School for Undergraduate Studies and the School of Nursing and Allied Health. This new submission process will provide enhancements, including:
- Email notification to mentor when a petition is approved or denied.
- Streamlining and shortening the petition process.
Mentors can submit a petition to request a change to a student’s Degree Works audit, including:
- Course substitution or change in the major/AOS, general education, ed planning, etc.
- Unevaluated or unapplied transfer credit.
- Pre-2018 SUNY Empire coursework needing review.
- Lower-level transfer course meeting an upper-level requirement.
This new process will be available starting September 5. Training for submitting petitions will be available on September 11 at 10 a.m. during the regular Transfer and Degree Works Office Hours.
Concurrence and Rationale:
As a reminder, all students in the School for Undergraduate Studies who matriculated prior to Fall 2022 still require degree program review and approval/concurrence. This includes students in structured programs as well as those in individualized programs. For all students, a rationale must be included with the degree program plan upon submission to the Office of Academic Review. Matriculation date can be found in the Advising Student Profile in Self-Service Banner, in DP Planner, and in Degree Works. Please see the Degree Works FAQ page for more details about DP Planner and Degree Works.

Reminder About Scheduling Meetings and Course Activities
As you develop your schedules for the academic year, please take a moment to review the DEI calendar. Per Section 224-a of the Education Law, “students unable, because of religious beliefs, to engage in learning activities – classes, examinations, study or work requirements – on a particular day or days will not be penalized and will be provided with means to make up for any study opportunities that may have been missed because of absence for religious reasons.” More information can be found in the university catalog section on religious observance.
