Opioid misuse continues to be a serious concern in Washington, and prescription pain relievers remain a key source of misuse – often obtained from friends or family – and contribute to thousands of preventable overdoses each year. Protect your loved ones by safely disposing of unwanted, unused, or expired medications this spring.

Connection as a Protective Factor
Research shows that when a young person feels connected to at least one caring adult, they are more resilient and multiple connections increase the likelihood that they will thrive. By publicly celebrating young people and the adults arounds them, we create stronger bonds.
Because when young people have a sense of connectedness to community, peers & adults they:
- see they have people who care about them as individuals today and care about what happens to them in the future.
- feel more secure and confident that they can share the joy, pain, and uncertainties that come with being an adolescent.
- tend to seek timely assistance and resources from people they have learned to count on when faced with challenges.
- feel loved, wanted, and valued, which helps them move confidently through life.
Protective factors help prevent youth substance use, mental health challenges & suicide, and other harms. Learn more about risk & protective factors here.

| | Easy Weeknight Recipe: Broccoli Mac | | | | |
Spring can be a busy season, so having a 'back-pocket' recipe to feed a hungry family at the end of the day is a win. Our Broccoli Mac & Cheese recipe can be made on the stovetop in one pot or finished in the oven for a crunchy top. Add a rotisserie chicken or other lean protein to your plate or enjoy as-is for a meatless main dish.
Did you know? Including fats like cheese with nutrient & fiber-rich broccoli can help our bodies absorb vitamins A, K, & E and adds a rich flavor that even picky eaters enjoy!

| | | What it Takes to Steward Local Resources | | |
Behind the scenes of our 50+ programs, the administrative team works to support health initiatives in our community. One way is by identifying and applying for grants to provide continuous services. Nearly all our programs are currently funded through one or more federal, state, or private grants. As an organization, we are entrusted with up to $3 million annually to meet urgent & emerging needs.
Another way we provide support is through comprehensive financial management resulting in successful audits. We consistently receive opinions of “no findings” from auditors, indicating our reliable financial statements and compliance with rules and regulations. We strive to maintain high standards of excellence and transparency regarding all matters as a community owned entity!

It is with deep appreciation and gratitude for his public service that we share the passing of former Skagit County Public Hospital District 304 Commissioner, Robert Michael “Bob” Stanley, who died on March 5, 2026, at the age of 78.
Stanley served as a dedicated member of the Board of Commissioners for over two decades. He helped guide our hospital district through a period of growth and change, as we entered into the agreement with PeaceHealth for them to provide all medical and clinical services. As a practicing pharmacist for more than 50 years, Bob’s commitment to his community was apparent in all aspects of his life. When he wasn’t representing District 304 throughout Skagit County, you might have seen him volunteering at the Heritage Flight Museum, driving one of his classic cars, or attending events at Skagit Speedway.
