Youth Got This!

Over 100 students from nine middle schools across Skagit, San Juan, Snohomish, and Whatcom counties spent a day with us learning about effective leadership skills, how to de-escalate conflicts, and ways to stay grounded in healthy habits. The day was filled with engaging and fun activities that helped strengthen their teamwork, creative problem-solving, and self-reflection muscles! The regional summit is one of the ways we help youth live active, substance-free lives today so they can reach their goals and dreams for the future.

Showing Up – Right from the Start

Liz Cooksey, our Newborn Outreach Nurse, has been welcoming families at Skagit Valley Hospital’s Birth Center for a whole year! Since May 2024, Liz has visited more than 300 families, offering support at a critical time for both parents and babies.

In addition to providing resource referrals, essential supplies, and educational materials in the hospital, Liz invites families to attend our Play & Grow drop-in groups to build community with other new parents/caregivers after they return home. Weekly groups, in English and Spanish, provide time for play, discussion, and questions about development for the Help Me Grow Nurses.

Great Produce, Worthy Cause

For the first time, Concrete Farm to School will have a weekly farmstand for community access to student-grown produce!

Every Wednesday, from June 11 to September 14, you can pick up veggies and flowers from 3 to 6 pm in front of the Farm to School Greenhouse on the Concrete School District campus.

Early summer items available will include snap peas, lettuce, kale, spinach, basil, and cherry tomatoes, plus spring blooms and seedlings! All produce and flowers are available by suggested donation. Download the Information Card to learn more.

Pickle Your Fancy

Although cucumber pickles are a classic add-on for your favorite cookout meal, many types of spring & summer veggies can be pickled for delicious results! Quick fridge pickles eliminate the need for canning and are customizable to your family’s taste preferences. More than a condiment, pickled veggies can play a starring role on a cheese board, salad, or snack plate!

Growing Home Gardens with Farm to School

Concrete Farm to School hosted an on-site Plant Fair at the school's greenhouse on May 6 and then took student-grown seedlings to the Master Gardener Plant Fair on May 10. In addition to growing food for our students and community, it’s important for us to empower others to grow their own food and flowers! Many students have been taking extra seedlings home from school, putting into practice the skills they learn during garden lessons.

At the Master Gardener Plant Fair, our plants were available by suggested donation, with all proceeds supporting our program and students. Volunteers came together to haul over 1300 plants to the Skagit County Fairgrounds on Friday, and we’re happy to say that about 90% of those plants went home with shoppers, earning more than $4,500 for the Concrete Farm to School program!
