| | Volunteering doesn’t just help our community, it provides a sense of purpose, connection, and confidence to the volunteer as well. Our Youth United: Varsity in Volunteerism (ViV) program unites high schoolers in service and offers meaningful recognition for their efforts. More than 135 students from all six high schools participated in ViV in the 2024-2025 school year, and contributed 10,800 hours of service to local non-profits, schools, and organizations! In May, we celebrated these students and their families in an evening event and awarded varsity letters to more than 60 students who served 100+ hours each this year! The Burlington-Edison award recipients posed for this photo: | | | | |
Varsity in Volunteerism clubs are in every school in Skagit!
If you or your teen are interested in learning more or joining ViV in high school, check out our ViV website for more information
Youth United: Varsity in Volunteerism is a program of United General District 304, offered in partnership with the United Way of Skagit County and local school districts.

| | | | Student-Favorite Recipe: Onigiri | |
Concrete Farm to School staff asked students about their favorite recipes and memories this school year, and onigiri (Japanese rice balls) rose to the top. Kids loved forming the triangles or spheres filled with customizable goodies, including flavorful mixed greens. When kids are smiling and eating kale and seaweed, it’s a win!
Cooking with kids provides fun, real-world ways to practice math, language, and reasoning skills, so give this recipe a try for a delicious (and enriching) meal this summer. Check out the recipe and visual procedures for everything you’ll need.

Did you know WIC and Basic Food (SNAP) both offer ways for participants to use their benefits at farmers markets? It’s easy and can offer additional savings or opportunities to stretch your budget. Stop by and learn more!
