Overdose Awareness & Action
People around the world unite in August to remember those we’ve lost to overdose and renew a commitment to ending overdose and drug-related harms.
Join Skagit County Public Health and other local organizations on Wednesday, August 27 from 5 to 8 pm at the fairgrounds for a memorial walk and resource fair. Our team will be there with a table and information about our many programs and services. This annual family-friendly event reminds us that, together, we can create a future free from stigma and overdose.
See the official event flyer on Facebook.

Bursting with Summer Flavor
Sunny days mean bountiful tomatoes. Concrete Farm to School has harvested snacking, slicing, and stewing tomatoes weekly for the Wednesday afternoon farmstand (running through September 24) and for students and volunteers to take home.
This simple pasta recipe with fresh basil and tomato puts the abundance to good use and tastes like summer in a bowl!

Career Development for Youth
Our Farm to School programs serve over 700 youth each year. For a select group of high school students in Concrete, summer brings a chance to explore farming and food access as a paid program assistant with us.
| | |
For eight weeks, students help maintain the school farm, run the donor bouquet share, manage the farmstand, and learn to work as a team. This year, we also have a returning student acting as a crew leader with increased responsibilities including creating harvest and task lists and facilitating projects.
For most, this opportunity is their first job. Going through the application, interview, and onboarding process and gaining experience with agriculture while practicing the power skills needed for any job, prepares them for a successful future!

Exercise and Quality of Life
Getting started with physical activity can feel daunting, but even small steps can lead to big rewards! A single session of moderate to vigorous physical activity can help you feel better today – improving things like sleep, anxiety, and blood pressure.
Recruiting an exercise buddy and bundling meaningful rewards with exercise are two strategies to move more each week. Professional support from a personal trainer and an exercise community also helps, and United Fitness Center is your local gym offering both!

Bridge Ribbon Cutting and Celebration
The Song Sparrow Bridge at Northern State Recreation Area was completed earlier this year, linking trails created by volunteers with Skagit Trail Builders! Use the Fruitdale Rd entrance and follow the signs to the event, which starts at 1 pm with refreshments available.

National Breastfeeding Month
August brings a chance to celebrate the benefits of human milk and the work being done to protect, promote, and support lactation practices and policies locally! For the past 50 years, Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) has been a leader in first foods and breastfeeding support, and United General WIC staff are passionate about meeting families where they are and helping them achieve their breastfeeding/chest-feeding goals.
In addition to a free monthly class, we offer one-on-one support in person and over the phone, a variety of breast pumps, and resources or referrals to other community agencies. Visit the United General WIC FAQ page for common questions and answers from our knowledgeable staff about breastfeeding.

Community-Owned, Community-Focused
You may have seen more media coverage about hospital districts and commissioner roles during the August voting period. Due to laws created in 1945 in Washington State, public hospital districts allow local communities to run hospitals and provide health services. United General District 304 is the largest of the three public hospital districts in Skagit County and is responsible for providing health and wellness services and programs. We are here for YOU!

Foundation of District 304

The Foundation relies on community engagement to help us deliver programs that help people get healthy and stay that way through all stages of life. Want to help in making your community a better place? Join us today by donating, volunteering, or learning other ways to become involved
