Informed Kids, Engaged Citizens

Family current event toolkit

Children orbit their school universe managing friendship drama and travel soccer while deciphering Shakespeare and geometry. Amidst the daily drumbeat, parents can guide children to care about civic affairs, whether turmoil in Haiti, upcoming presidential election or Miami housing affordability. As they learn about local and global issues, encourage them to follow their interests and make a difference in their schools, clubs and faith communities.

Coffee, Energy Drinks, Spicy Chips and Other Things Your Teen Should Avoid

Part of growing up is taking responsibility for the things we consume. Hopefully, parents have instilled healthy eating and drinking habits in their children, but once kids get to the teenage years, they will start to have more control over what they put in their bodies, whether at school or in other social situations. The truth is they don’t always take the responsibility seriously, so parents need to be vigilant and continue to guide them as much as they can.

It used to be that too much candy or carbonated beverages were the biggest worries parents had to deal with in terms of healthy eating and teens. But the market for drinks and snacks that target teens has grown considerably, so parents need to be aware of the following consumables and help limit or steer their kids away from them altogether.

Maybe a Bear Ate It! Gives Lessons on Losing Things: The Children's Trust Book Club

Losing things can be one extremely frustrating for anyone, but for young kids it can be extra anxiety producing as they often don’t have the problem-solving and coping skills to deal with lost items. With the help of The Children’s Trust Book Club, parents and caregivers can learn how to help their kids find what was lost and, maybe more importantly, talk with them about how to deal with lost items and explain some of the emotions they may be feeling.

The Book Club’s September title for Three-Year Olds, Maybe a Bear Ate It, is a great way for parents and kids to learn about losing things, and how to deal with the consequences, in a fun, imaginative and enriching way. The book is about losing something and not being able to go to sleep until you find it. Along with the story itself, the reading guide provides parents and caregivers with tips on how to read the book with their children, as well as additional questions they can ask and conversation points to help children cope with losing things.

Additionally, the provided activity sheet has a “Book” label that can be cut out and used for kids to identify an area where they can put all their books, so they won’t lose any!
