The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has expanded on President Joe Biden’s executive order mandating face masks on planes, making the refusal to wear the covering a violation of federal law, reports Travel Pulse. The rule “will protect Americans and provide confidence that we can once again travel safely even during this pandemic," said Dr. Marty Cetron, director of CDC’s division of migration and quarantine, who signed the order. The rule went into effect on Monday, and applies to travelers on airplanes, trains, subways, buses, taxis and ride-shares. It says travelers must wear a mask that covers their nose and mouth while riding and while getting on and off rides. The order extends to waiting areas such as airports, train platforms and subway stations. The order exempts children under two years of age and people with a disability that makes it unsafe to wear a mask. Travelers will be allowed to remove masks while eating or drinking.

As the Biden administration continues to initiate new mandates to help slow the spread of COVID-19 while traveling, many states are maintaining their restrictions on interstate travel, applying quarantine and testing requirements to out-of-state travelers. It is important for travelers to be updated on the latest statewide regulations. While some US states have no restrictions on travel, all their sites have important COVID-19 safety information, including possible face mask mandates in public settings. States without travel restrictions might still have mask mandates. Click "Read More" below for a comprehensive list of state-specific travel restrictions and safety mandates currently in place across the US as assembled by CNN.

American Airlines has announced that it has expanded its acceptance of VeriFLY, the mobile health wallet that simplifies testing verification requirements. Starting Wednesday, February 3rd, travelers flying from all of American’s domestic airports to eight countries will have the option to use the free VeriFLY app to upload required travel documents such as negative COVID-19 test results, and show those credentials in order to travel on American. Previously, the airline accepted the app for outbound travel from the United States only from the airline’s hub at Miami International Airport (MIA).

Travelers can now use the VeriFLY app for document verification when traveling on the following American Airlines-operated routes:
  • International flights to the US
  • Direct and connecting flights from American’s domestic airports to:
  • United Kingdom
  • Canada
  • Jamaica
  • Chile
  • Colombia
  • El Salvador
  • Honduras
  • Guatemala

British Airways will begin using mobile health passport tool VeriFLY on flights from London to the United States, reports Business Travel News. Beginning February 4th, travelers on British Airways flights from London can provide digital health documents, including negative COVID-19 test results, to the app and verify that they meet all entry requirements to the United States. Currently, the carrier is operating service to Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, DC. In the "near future," British Airways also will enable travelers to use the app when flying from the United States to the United Kingdom, according to the carrier. British Airways and American Airlines are the first trans-Atlantic joint business alliance that will accept a common mobile health passport for those eligible travelers who are permitted to fly between the United States and the United Kingdom.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has introduced touchless, automated photo ID scanners at all its security screening checkpoints, reports Airport Technology. According to TSA, LAX is the first airport in the country to be completely equipped with this technology. TSA is now making use of credential authentication technology (CAT) at every security checkpoint in the airport. At the travel document checking station, travelers will be required to hand over their ID to the security officer, who will confirm the authenticity of the document by inserting it into the scanner. Instead of handing over their boarding passes, travelers will only have to hold them up for visual inspection by the security officer, thus reducing a touchpoint.
