The Public Health Agency of Canada has announced that it will open its border to fully vaccinated US travelers on August 9, reports Travel Weekly. US citizens and permanent residents who have received their full vaccination dosage at least two weeks prior to travel can visit Canada without quarantining, although they will still be required to present a quarantine plan in case it is needed. Vaccinated travelers must still provide a negative COVID-19 test taken prior to arrival, but fully vaccinated travelers will not need to be tested again after arrival, unless they are randomly selected to take a test as part of a new border testing surveillance program at both airports and land borders. Travelers will need to submit their travel information to the ArriveCAN app or web portal. Additionally, Canada is ending its requirement for arriving international travelers to spend three nights in a government-authorized hotel. Canada will also allow international flights starting August 9, to land at five additional airports: Edmonton, Halifax, Ottawa, Quebec City, and Winnipeg. Currently, international flights are allowed to land only at airports in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver.

As more countries continue opening up to American travelers, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has launched a remote interview pilot for renewing Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) members. According to the CBP, the pilot enables eligible TTP members to complete enrollment renewal interviews with a CBP Officer through video teleconferencing, while ensuring that the remote interview process maintains high security and privacy standards. CBP will use Zoom for government videoconferencing software to conduct the remote interviews. Some renewing Global Entry members who are conditionally approved are eligible to participate in the pilot. Renewing NEXUS, FAST, and SENTRI members will be integrated into the pilot over the next several weeks through a phased approach, while first-time TTP applicants will not be eligible to participate.

To be eligible for the remote interview pilot, TTP members must:
  • Be conditionally approved for a TTP renewal
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a photo on file with CBP that was taken (1) within the past 10 years, and (2) after the applicant was 14 years of age
  • Have previously submitted fingerprints to CBP

Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the US State Department have issued their highest warnings against travel to the United Kingdom (UK) due to rising COVID-19 cases, reports USA Today. The CDC raised the travel advisory for the UK to a level 4, meaning "avoid travel." The alert had been at level 3 since May, which advised travelers to be fully vaccinated before travel to the UK and recommended that unvaccinated travelers avoid nonessential travel. The State Department also raised its alert level on the UK to level 4, which means "do not travel,'' to reflect the CDC's designation. The State Department has mirrored the CDC's COVID-19 designations in its alerts since April.

Congress has passed new legislation that, if passed into law, would require the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to develop a new plan to improve COVID-related airport security screening protocols, reports Travel Pulse. The bill directs the TSA to work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Department of Health and Human Services on a strategy to reduce the spread of COVID-19 at traveler screening checkpoints and among agency personnel. The legislation requires the TSA to issue a plan within 90 days, which will be analyzed once a year through an extensive review conducted by the Government Accountability Office. “As Americans begin to travel again, we must take steps to guarantee the safety of critical frontline workers and air passengers from the dangers posed by the virus, including the delta variant and other variants that could come our way,” said House Homeland Security Chairwoman Representative Nanette Barragan. If the legislation becomes a law, the TSA would be required to implement additional "best practices" such as increasing the frequency of disinfecting surfaces in security checkpoint areas and opening additional checkpoint lanes to reduce wait times for travelers.

The MIT Technology Review has released a guide regarding the status of vaccine passports in each state of the US. While President Joe Biden has said that there won't be a national app, states are free to choose whether or not they want to implement some sort of digital vaccination app. According to the MIT Technology Review, 4 states - California, Hawaii, Louisiana, and New York - have active vaccine certification apps, while 19 states have banned the systems to some degree. Most states have addressed the technology in some way, either in legislation or in comments from a lawmaker, a public health official, or the governor.
