EU TO DELAY LAUNCH OF ETIAS UNTIL 2025
The European Union (EU) has once again postponed the launch date of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), reports Schengen Area-specialist website SchengenVisaInfo.com. An EU official told the website that the go-live date for ETIAS has now been delayed to May 2025 at the earliest because of issues launching the Entry/Exit System (EES) that would track visitors into Europe. The EES is another EU border security system, an automated IT system that, in the future, will register travelers from countries each time they cross an EU external border. The system has been continuously postponed alongside the ETIAS. “We had initially hoped for the EES to become operational by the end of this year or, at the latest, the beginning of the next year. Due to unforeseen delays, it has become evident that this timeline is unattainable. As a result, the implementation of the ETIAS has been rescheduled to May 2025, with the possibility of further postponement.” While the European Commission has yet to officially confirm this latest delay to the implementation of ETIAS, the postponement has been confirmed by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration, and the EU Commission’s Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs. “The date of the entry into operation of ETIAS is not yet known. It is expected to be announced at the end of 2023,” said the commission.

DELTA TO FLY LARGEST-EVER TRANSATLANTIC SCHEDULE IN SUMMER 2024
Delta Air Lines has announced that it is adding new routes to Europe for summer 2024. The carrier, which is the largest airline flying to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East from its hub at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), will operate nearly 260 weekly flights to 18 countries and 29 destinations throughout the region next summer. Beginning May 23, 2024, Delta will begin nonstop daily service from JFK to Naples, Italy, as well as resuming service to Shannon, Ireland. The airline will also fly nonstop from JFK to Munich, Germany, three times a week beginning April 9, 2024, and will again offer nonstop flights from Atlanta to Zurich, Switzerland, four times weekly beginning May 31, 2024. The carrier also plans to add more flights from Atlanta to Paris and Venice next summer.

POTENTIAL US GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN COULD AFFECT AMERICANS’ FALL TRAVEL PLANS
A potential government shutdown in October could disrupt Americans’ fall travel plans, reports CBS News. Although Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) employees, including air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents, are considered essential and would therefore be required to work in the event of a shutdown, they would have to do so without immediate pay, according to the White House. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre warned that this could cause "significant" delays for travelers. The strain on the US travel system would lead to more flight delays, longer screening lines, and holdups in air travel modernization. A shutdown would also halt the FAA's efforts to hire and train 2,600 new employees and would also coincide with a shortage of roughly 3,000 air traffic controllers. During the 2018-2019 shutdown, an uptick in unscheduled air traffic controller absences led to flight cancellations and travel disruptions at New York's LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and major airports in Atlanta, Newark, and Philadelphia. Additionally, a potential shutdown may cause passport delays as some passport agencies are housed in government buildings that would close in the event of a shutdown, leading to fewer available appointments for renewals and new applications as well as processing delays.

FAA WANTS TO ADJUST SCHEDULES AT NEWARK LIBERTY AIRPORT
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) wants to better align the hourly schedules of its employees at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in light of the additional slot waivers, reports Travel Pulse. The plan would put limits on the hourly schedules with the goal to limit congestion at EWR as airlines increase their takeoffs and landings. “Even with the current targeted scheduling limits, on-time performance at EWR is among the worst in the nation,” FAA officials said. “Since 2018, EWR has had the largest number of Ground Delay Programs (GDPs), the largest number of late arriving aircraft due to GDPs, and the lowest on-time arrival rate among the Core 30 airports.” The FAA said it would adjust those guidelines downward for eight months beginning in March. In order to accomplish its goal, the FAA is asking for the voluntary cooperation of the airlines. United Airlines, which uses EWR as one of its hubs, said it would be more conservative with its takeoff and landings at the airport going forward.

AMTRAK AWARDED NEARLY $200M IN FEDERAL GRANTS
Amtrak has announced that the company and its partners have been awarded nearly $200 million from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) competitive grant program. “The CRISI grants announced today will help launch new and expanded service, advance critical safety and reliability improvements, and provide opportunities for the workforce, marking another big milestone as we continue to advance a new era of passenger rail,” said Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner. The funding will support four projects in the Northeast Corridor and the Gulf Coast states. Along the Northeast Corridor, the grant will fund a study and survey to inform future fence installation at sites vulnerable to and at high risk for unauthorized access. For the Gulf Coast Corridor Improvement Project, Amtrak and the Southern Rail Commission will use funds to launch twice-daily service next year between Mobile and New Orleans. Amtrak also submitted additional federal grant applications to improve the company’s National Network and advance NEC upgrades through the FRA’s Corridor ID and Fed-State Partnership Programs.
