HEATHROW WORKERS CALL OFF FIRST SUMMER STRIKES

Security workers at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) have postponed the first two days of strike action planned for June 24 and 25 after receiving an improved pay offer, reports BBC. Unite, the union that represents the security workers, said it has called off the initial two days of strikes as a "gesture of goodwill" after "extensive talks" between workers and management. Unite members will vote on the latest pay deal over the coming days; however, if that vote is rejected, the remaining 29 days of strikes will go ahead as planned. The strikes will affect Terminals 3 and 5, which are primarily used by American Airlines, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, and Virgin Atlantic, among others. The strikes could lead to longer lines at security, but the airport said it does not anticipate any flight cancelations as a result of the potential work stoppages. The remaining strike days are: June 28-30; July 14-16, 21-24, 28-31; and August 4-7, 11-14, 18-20, 24-27. The walkouts coincide with busy travel periods including the summer holiday period for schools across the UK.

CLEAR RESERVE ALLOWS TRAVELERS TO CUT LONG SECURITY LINES FOR FREE THIS SUMMER

With the busy summer travel season starting, CLEAR has expanded its RESERVE service that allows travelers to reserve a front-of-the-line time slot at TSA checkpoints and bypass long lines for free, reports The Washington Post. First launched at Orlando International Airport (MCO) in October 2021, the program now includes 20 airports in North America and Europe with additional airports to be added in the future. Unlike CLEAR Plus and TSA PreCheck, RESERVE is available at no cost and does not involve fingerprinting, eye scans, background checks, or interviews. A few days or weeks before their trip, travelers can go on CLEAR'S website or app and choose their departure airport, flight, and time they wish to pass through security. At the airport, an “ambassador” in the RESERVE lane will scan their QR code and escort them to the front of a standard TSA lane, where they will present their ID. While the service allows travelers to jump to the front of the line, they can’t skip standard TSA screening protocols, even if they have TSA PreCheck. Travelers using CLEAR RESERVE must remove their shoes, coats, electronics, and appropriately sized liquids, depending on the checkpoint technology. Travelers looking for expedited screening in CLEAR lanes at select airports with no removal of said items above can sign up to become a CLEAR Plus member. Lawyers Travel clients have access to a discounted CLEAR Plus membership rate of $119/year, a $70 savings from the $189 public rate.

AMERICAN WILL NOW CHARGE BASIC ECONOMY PASSENGERS TO CHECK BAGS ON ALL TICKETS

American Airlines will now charge for checked bags on all basic economy tickets, reports USA Today. The carrier announced it would introduce a $75 fee for the first checked bags on basic economy fares on transoceanic flights, saying the change is meant to make the terms of basic economy more consistent across its network. “We are simplifying our product offerings to make it easier for customers when they are shopping for travel. With this change, our Basic Economy product will include all of the same features whether a customer is purchasing it for a domestic or international flight,” American spokesperson Andrea Koos said in a statement. The new fee means that on American's longest flights, a ticket will cost nearly $100 more than the published price if a traveler ends up needing to check a bag. Both Delta Air Lines and United Airlines continue to offer free first checked bags on transpacific flights for basic economy ticketholders, but like American, charge $75 on transatlantic flights. The Biden Administration and the Department of Transportation have been trying to crack down on airline fees, but so far there has been no formal change to restrict bag charges.

LAWMAKERS INTRODUCE BIPARTISAN FAA REAUTHORIZATION BILL

US lawmakers have introduced the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act, which includes funding for FAA reforms, workforce development, airport infrastructure, and aviation safety, reports Travel Pulse. HR 3935, also known as the Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act, is bipartisan legislation that serves to reauthorize the FAA for the next five years. “The bill provides funding for the latest safety technology on runways, and to hire more air traffic controllers, pilots, and mechanics,” said Sen. Maria Cantwell, chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation and one of the lawmakers who sponsored the legislation in the senate. “The bill also sets the first-ever clear ticket refund standards for delayed flights and will penalize airlines that sell tickets on flights that they don’t have the staff or technology to operate.” If approved, the bill will provide more than $107 billion in appropriations for the FAA for fiscal years 2024 through 2028. “The FAA Reauthorization Act is a win for aviation safety advocates and the flying public,” said Aviation Subcommittee Chair Tammy Duckworth. “This bill includes… a modified version of the EVAC Act—to make flying safer and more accessible for all Americans. I’m grateful to my colleagues for working together to produce a strong, bipartisan bill that helps modernize the FAA, boosts the aviation workforce, increases consumer protections and makes sure people with a disability are seen and heard.”

DELTA, AIR 4 ALL DEVELOPING A FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND AIRLINE SEAT FOR WHEELCHAIR USERS

Delta Air Lines has teamed up with UK-based consortium Air 4 All to construct a new cabin seat option for wheelchair users, reports Business Insider. A working prototype was officially debuted at the Aircraft Interiors Expo on June 6, but the seat still needs to be certified and tested before making its way to a plane cabin. According to Air 4 All, the patented seat has several pieces that allow it to convert into a wheelchair-accessible position. This includes a removable back cushion and adjustable seat that flips up. With the cushion removed and seat flipped up, the wheelchair can then be backed into the space and securely attached. The company says the design does not eliminate seat perks and will still offer passengers access to a headrest, center console tray tables, and a cocktail table. The design is also multi-purpose, allowing it to be used by a non-wheelchair user if there is not a disabled traveler onboard. In addition, the design does not require any change to current cabin configurations.
