NORTH AMERICAN CARRIERS’ SEPTEMBER ON-TIME PERFORMANCE UP AGAIN

The on-time performance of North American carriers improved in September for a second month in a row, reports Business Travel News. According to Cirium’s latest monthly report, on-time performance increased 5.5 percentage points from August levels to 77.3 percent. Each qualifying carrier showed month-over-month improvement, with Delta Air Lines on top again at 86.4 percent (up 3.6 percent), followed by Alaska Airlines at 83.8 percent (up 2.3 percent). United was third at 82.5 percent, and American Airlines close behind at 82.3 percent. Delta and United once again made the global on-time performance list, at third and tenth. In addition, North American airlines in September canceled 9,852 flights, a 24.3 percent decrease from August. A flight is considered on time if the aircraft arrives at the gate within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time.

UNITED WILL CHANGE ITS BOARDING PROCESS THIS MONTH

United Airlines is updating its boarding process this month, allowing travelers in window and middle seats to board earlier in an effort to speed up the process, reports Travel + Leisure. The new procedure – called "WILMA" for window, middle, and aisle – will go into effect on October 26. The procedure saves up to two minutes of boarding time, according to the airline. The boarding procedure was used prior to 2017 when United introduced its carry-on restricted basic economy fare. Technical advancements have now allowed United to bring it back. Similar to the current procedure, the boarding process will start with pre-boarding travelers with disabilities, unaccompanied minors, active-duty military, global service members, families traveling with young children 2 and under, and United Premier 1K members. Travelers in United Polaris business class, United first class, and other premium cabins as well as status holders will then be able to board. The airline will then board travelers sitting in window seats or exit rows. New this month, the airline will next board travelers in middle seats, followed by those sitting in aisle seats. Finally, United will board travelers sitting in basic economy, as well as travelers who don’t have a boarding group listed on their boarding pass.

BIDEN ADMINISTRATION CONTINUES PRESSURE ON JUNK FEES

The Biden administration continues to call out the travel industry for the proliferation of junk fees, and now, it has a plan to get rid of the charges that travelers frequently encounter, reports Skift. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) unveiled a proposed rule that would ban businesses — including hotel and lodging companies, short-term rental providers, and car rentals — from charging misleading fees. Businesses would also be required to show the full price of their purchase up front, as well as whether fees are refundable. “If these are rules are finalized, they won’t just be (made voluntary) — they’ll be made mandatory,” President Joe Biden said. Under the FTC’s proposal, companies that fail to comply could be subject to fines and possibly have to provide refunds to consumers. The FTC announced in October 2022 that it was exploring a rule to crack down on junk fees after the White House raised concerns, specifically targeting airline and hotel resort fees. A 60-day public comment period is set to begin soon after which the FTC will determine any changes to the proposed rule. Then, the Commission will vote on a final rule.

FOUR US AIRLINES FACE POSSIBLE STRIKES

Four US airlines – Alaska, American, Southwest, and United – are all facing potential strikes, reports Travel Pulse. However, all four are still negotiating and seem to be bargaining in good faith. The ongoing negotiations are governed by the Railway Labor Act and require a series of steps that both sides must follow, including an appearance before the National Mediation Board. “This strike-authorization vote represents an important step in our fight for an industry-leading agreement," the flight attendant union said. "We cannot strike until released by the National Mediation Board and following a 30-day cooling-off period," but if management continues proposing concessions coupled with meager improvements to compensation and retirement, we will not hesitate to request a release to strike if necessary." Airline strikes are rare, with the last major US airline strike occurring in 1997.

DELTA REVAMPS ITS INFLIGHT WINE PROGRAM

Delta Air Lines has announced that it is taking its one-of-a-kind wine program to new heights with the addition of 17 high-quality wines to a rotational inflight menu. The wine service – available in all Main Cabin and higher fare classes – offers a robust and diverse selection of flavors, highlighting both big-name brands and little-known gems of the wine world. “While cultivating a list of delicious wines was paramount, Delta’s criteria in sourcing program partners went far beyond a wine’s finish,” said Kristen Manion Taylor, SVP of In-flight Service. “The final selections represent brands that share Delta’s values—brands that reflect the diverse community of the winegrowing world and lead their industry in sustainability practices.” Partnering with Master Sommelier Andrea Robinson, Delta has curated a wine list that’s elevated, balanced, diverse, and delicious. Each wine will complement the carrier’s onboard offerings and have been tested to ensure they taste well at 35,000 feet, where taste buds are dulled and different flavors are accentuated.
