TSA SCREENED 2.56 MILLION TRAVELERS ON NOVEMBER 27, HIGHEST SINCE 2019

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screened 2.56 million travelers on Sunday, November 27, the highest number since December 2019 and the busiest day since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, reports Reuters. Sunday's number was slightly below the 2.88 million travelers screened on the same day in 2019 at the end of the busy Thanksgiving travel period.

Between November 18 and November 27, US airlines carried 22.2 million travelers compared with 23.5 million in the same period in 2019, down by about 5.5%. The carriers reported very few cancellations over the holiday travel period, with only 177 on Sunday and 56 on Monday, according to FlightAware. US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said that "the system did well. Sunday's weather led to an elevated but not extreme level of delays (5.3%) & overall cancellation rates held below 1.0%."

UK CONSIDERS DROPPING LIQUIDS IN LUGGAGE RULE BY 2024

Airports in the United Kingdom are considering the removal of the limitations and rules on liquids packed in luggage, as well as requirements for laptop computers, by 2024, reports Travel Pulse.

Airports will instead transition to high-tech sensors similar to 3D CT scanners that provide a cleaner, clearer picture of the liquids. It is anticipated that the enhanced technology will cut down on wait times at security. Currently, travelers are allowed to bring liquids in their carry-on bags that total just over 3 fluid ounces. 3D scanners are already being used on a trial basis at Heathrow, according to airport CEO John Holland-Kaye. "We have just started the expansion of the security area in Terminal 3 which will have more CT scanners and have a deadline of mid-2024 from the [Department for Transport],” he said. “By then the normal passenger experience will be that liquids stay in bags." An official announcement on the potential rule change is expected before the end of December.

BRITISH AIRWAYS OFFERS OPTION TO BUY CARBON REMOVALS CREDITS TO TAKE CO2 OUT OF ATMOSPHERE

British Airways has begun selling carbon removal credits to travelers, giving them the option to pay for CO2 to be removed from the atmosphere, reports MSN. The airline already offers options to pay for verified carbon offsets and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Travelers can choose on a sliding scale what proportion of their spend they wish to allocate to carbon removal or offsetting, and how much for SAF. Contributions are entirely voluntary, and travelers can calculate their emissions and then buy the credits before or after they fly, or even from their seat while traveling. British Airways is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 or sooner and already offsets the carbon emissions on all flights within the UK. Carrie Harris, director of sustainability at British Airways, said: “It’s important that we give customers options [...] By choosing carbon removals projects as part of their action to address the emissions associated with flying, our customers are not only joining us on our journey to a more sustainable future, but also helping accelerate the development of the vital carbon removal industry.”
