TSA UNVEILS FIRST SELF-SCREENING SECURITY LANE AT LAS VEGAS
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has unveiled the country’s first self-service screening system at Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas, reports The Washington Post. As of Monday, March 11, TSA PreCheck members can participate in the pilot program designed to modernize checkpoints and give travelers more autonomy. The new process allows travelers to scan their own bags and themselves, with instructions provided by video monitors located above the belt. Travelers who have questions can speak with an agent via video interface. In addition, TSA staff members will still be available to check IDs and oversee secondary screenings of bags and pat downs of travelers suspected of carrying banned items. Officials said the objective is not to accelerate screenings but to improve the traveler experience. “We would love it if this ultimately speeds things up, but this is not the primary purpose at this point,” said John Fortune, the Department of Homeland Security’s Screening at Speed program manager. “It’s primarily to reduce the officer burden at the checkpoint and make this a more pleasant, passenger-friendly experience.”

FEBRUARY NORTH AMERICAN AIR ON-TIME PERFORMANCE IMPROVES
After decreasing in December and January, the average on-time performance in February for North American carriers recovered to 80 percent compared with 71.7 percent the month prior, reports Business Travel News. According to Cirium’s latest monthly report, each of the 10 carriers included posted improvements. Delta Air Lines was on top again with a performance of 89.3 percent, followed by United Airlines at 84.9 percent, and American Airlines at 84.4 percent. American, along with WestJet and Air Canada, improved from last month by double-digit percentage points. Additionally, Delta, United, and American each made February's global list of most on-time airlines, in second, fourth, and sixth place, respectively. A flight is considered on time if the aircraft arrives at the gate within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time.

UNITED TO ADD THREE NEW INTERNATIONAL DESTINATIONS
United Airlines has announced that it is adding new non-stop flights between New York/Newark-Marrakesh, Morocco; Tokyo/Narita-Cebu, Philippines; and Houston-Medellin, Colombia. United will also increase routes to Hong Kong; Seoul, South Korea; and Porto, Portugal. Additionally, the airline will add four weekly flights between Los Angeles and Shanghai as the Chinese and US governments recently agreed to increase flights between the two countries. "We have consistently been ahead of the curve in finding hidden gem destinations for our customers to explore and remain committed to providing the most unique slate of travel options for their adventures abroad," said Patrick Quayle, United's Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, "With our leading global network and elevated inflight experience, United has become the airline of choice for discerning customers looking for experiences they can't have with any other carrier."

BOEING DELAYS FORCE US AIRLINES TO CUT CAPACITY PLANS
US airlines have stated that their plans to increase capacity are in doubt due to more jet delivery delays from Boeing, reports Travel Pulse. The airline industry has already cut expectations for deliveries this year due to Boeing's issues, complicating efforts to meet record travel demand. Southwest Airlines announced last week that it expects to take 42 percent fewer MAX deliveries this year, which could cut the carrier’s 2024 capacity. Meanwhile, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said, “Boeing deliveries are going to be way behind this year.” While United and other carriers have started working with Airbus to fill the potential delivery void, backlogs at the European manufacturer make it difficult for US carriers to shift orders.

US AIRLINES AND AIRPORTS WITH THE BEST WI-FI
A new study shows which airlines and airports have the greatest capability to stay connected while traveling, reports Travel + Leisure. The study, conducted by electronics-based company Electronics Hub, found that Alaska Airlines has access to the best Wi-Fi in the skies in the US. Alaska was followed by JetBlue and Delta Air Lines, which came in at No. 2 and No. 3 on the list, with each offering free inflight Wi-Fi on their flights. Southwest Airlines, which now charges per flight instead of per day for the service, came in fourth. “Air travel is a great means of escape — and not just to your destination… But thankfully, for those who need or crave it, airport and airline Wi-Fi has improved lately,” Electronics Hub wrote in the study. On the ground, the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) ranked the best among North American airports, scoring a 4 out of 5 for connectivity. That was followed by both Portland International Airport (PDX), and Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in Canada.
