TSA TO REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SCREENING STEP FOR CLEAR MEMBERS

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) plans to increase the number of random identification checks for CLEAR Plus members, reports Business Insider. The random ID checks are part of a push to enhance CLEAR's screening protocols following a security breach that took place last year. Currently, CLEAR Plus members bypass TSA's ID verification process by confirming their identity biometrically at an airport kiosk before being escorted to the front of the security screening area. In the future, CLEAR Plus members will have their identity verified by the TSA, either physically or digitally, before reaching the security screening; although, the TSA has not yet determined when the new ID requirement will be implemented. CLEAR is working with the TSA and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to develop new digital identity technology that complies with the TSA's verification standards and keeps CLEAR's "touchless" screening process. "The implementation of these new standards will digitally transmit a passenger's identifying information from CLEAR to next-generation TSA hardware at airport checkpoints and avoid any need for passengers to show their IDs," said a CLEAR spokesperson. "We look forward to rolling this out in the future to create an even more seamless, secure traveler experience while avoiding disruption for passengers as travel continues to surge." Once the upgrades are completed, CLEAR Plus members can continue to take advantage of the platform's expedited airport screening protocols. Lawyers Travel clients have access to a discounted CLEAR Plus membership rate of $119/year, a $70 savings from the $189 public rate.

UNITED AIRLINES ADDING NEW ROUTES TO ITS PACIFIC NETWORK

United Airlines has announced that it will have new or expanded routes to its Pacific network servicing Hong Kong, Manila, Taipei, and Tokyo. Beginning October 28, the airline will start daily service from Los Angeles to Hong Kong. A day later, it will start direct service to Manila from San Francisco International Airport (SFO). "We will be the first US airline to ever have service between the mainland United States and the Philippines, "said United Senior Vice President of global network planning and alliances Patrick Quayle. In Tokyo, United will resume non-stop flights between Los Angeles and Tokyo/Narita, adding to its existing service between Los Angeles and Tokyo-Haneda. The airline will also increase flying to Taipei with a second daily year-round service from San Francisco. In total, the carrier will fly long-haul flights to 15 different international destinations across the Pacific this winter.

AMTRAK IMPROVES NORTHEAST CORRIDOR TRACKS

Amtrak has announced that it's upgrading the tracks on the Northeast Corridor this summer as part of a long-term effort to ensure the railroad operates at a level of peak performance. The work includes replacing 40 track switches throughout New York and Mid-Atlantic regions, updating 25 miles of track in the Mid-Atlantic, and completing over one million feet of surfacing work across the entire Northeast Corridor. While this work may result in occasional temporary inconveniences, the long-term benefits are many, including increased reliability and improved on time performance. “Updating railroad infrastructure is a fundamental component of our plan to deliver a new era of rail by modernizing the Amtrak fleet, building new bridges and tunnels, revitalizing stations and redefining the customer experience for the modern era,” said Amtrak Executive Vice President, Capital Delivery Laura Mason. “We’re grateful to our partners for their cooperation and flexibility as we advance these critical projects to achieve a state of good repair and enhance the overall Amtrak customer experience.” Newly adjusted train schedules are in place to avoid conflicts with commuter agencies; however, Amtrak has said that passengers traveling on the Northeast Corridor through September 30 may experience minor delays in various locations throughout the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions as a result of this track work.

ON-TIME PERFORMANCE OF NORTH AMERICAN CARRIERS DECLINED IN JUNE

The on-time performance of North American carriers declined more than 10 percentage points between May and June, reports Travel Pulse. According to Cirium's monthly report, June's on-time performance was 66.1 percent compared to 78.7 percent in May. Among the carriers listed, the performance declines ranged from 7.1 percent to 17.7 percent. Alaska Airlines (80.3 percent) was the only carrier to report average on-time performance over 80 percent, while Delta (79.7 percent), American (74.1 percent), and United (72.6 percent) were the only other carriers that placed above the weighted average of 68.1 percent. Inclement weather, labor shortages, and impacted visibility due to Canadian wildfire smoke likely contributed to the performance declines. A flight is considered on time if the aircraft arrives at the gate within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time.

WHITE HOUSE WANTS AVIATION BILL TO INCLUDE NEW CONSUMER PROTECTIONS

The White House is urging the House of Representatives to drop a provision in aviation legislation that allows airlines to advertise ticket prices without taxes and fees, as well as to include new consumer protections for travelers, reports Skift. The House is set to vote on legislation authorizing funding for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), but Republicans excluded many consumer protections requested by President Biden. The bill would rescind a 2012 Transportation Department regulation that requires airlines to advertise full fares including government fees and taxes. Democratic Representatives are seeking a vote on an amendment to keep the full fare disclosure rules. The White House said that “the disclosure requirements currently in place for passenger tickets are necessary to help consumers comparison shop for a ticket.” Fully transparent ticket pricing is just one part of the Biden Administration’s efforts to provide consumer protections. The administration also put forth legislation that would require airlines pay cash compensation for delays of three hours or more when the delay is the carrier’s fault.
