THANKSGIVING TRAVELERS NATIONWIDE MAY FACE WEATHER-RELATED DIFFICULTIES

Many Americans traveling over the Thanksgiving holiday period may face weather-related difficulties as multiple storm systems move across the US, reports Travel Pulse. Two distinct weather systems are poised to disrupt holiday travel, one targeting the Northeast and another heading along the West Coast, both potentially dumping rain and snow that could lead to delays. "While we can't control the weather, we will also be using every tool at our disposal to keep cancellations and delays as low as possible in the first place, including working collaboratively with the airlines," said Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigieg. According to The Weather Channel, much of the country will see relatively warm and dry weather on Thanksgiving Day. They also advise that for the journey home, there's a chance of some snow and sleet in the Northeast on Sunday. Travelers are advised to stay tuned to weather updates and consider making adjustments to their plans in anticipation of these challenges.

AMERICAN FLIGHT ATTENDANTS REQUEST RELEASE TO STRIKE

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA), which represents about 26,000 American Airlines flight attendants, has submitted a request to the National Mediation Board (NMB) to be released from federal mediation, reports Business Travel News. Since August, the union has "made it clear" during negotiation sessions mediated by the NMB that a "ratifiable deal needed to be presented" no later than the week of November 13. "Having passed that deadline without the change flight attendants need to see, APFA today submitted its official request to the NMB for release from mediation," the union said in a statement. If granted, the request would "start the clock on a 30-day cooling-off period," after which the flight attendants would be free to strike against American. American has emphasized that there is no possibility of a strike over this year's holiday season.

US STATE DEPARTMENT ISSUES WORLDWIDE CAUTION UPDATE TRAVEL ADVISORY

The US State Department has issued a worldwide caution update for Americans traveling overseas, reports Travel Pulse. “Due to increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against US citizens and interests, the Department of State advises US citizens overseas to exercise increased caution,” officials stated. The department advises travelers to: stay alert in locations frequented by tourists; enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive information and alerts and make it easier to locate travelers in an emergency overseas; and to follow the department on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter). The recent update comes less than a month after the State Department issued its first worldwide caution since August 2022.

Amtrak, in partnership with STARR Restaurant Group, has announced the debut of three new meals for the First Class dining menu on Acela trains traveling on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) between Boston and Washington, DC. The collaboration began in May, with four seasonal menu items in rotation across a six-month spring and summer cycle. “Expanding our partnership with the STARR Restaurant Group shows our continued commitment to enhancing the Acela First Class onboard experience,” said Amtrak Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Eliot Hamlisch. “We’re delighted to expand our reach of restaurants along the Northeast Corridor by adding the iconic Le Diplomate in DC, plus new items from The Continental Mid-town and Parc.” The three new menu items in rotation every three weeks include: Lobster Mac & Cheese from The Continental Mid-town, Beef Bourguignon from Parc, and Tropez Salad from Le Diplomate. For those traveling in the morning, freshly baked pastries are delivered daily from local bakeries.

US SENATE PANEL INVESTIGATES AIRLINE BAGGAGE AND SEAT SELECTION FEES

US Senate panel has announced an investigation into airline fees for baggage, seat selection, ticket changes, and other services, demanding justifications from the CEOs of five major carriers for these charges that generate billions of dollars in annual revenue, reports Skift. Senator Richard Blumenthal, who chairs the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, said these fees are often hidden from and confusing to consumers. Between 2018 and 2022, total revenue across major US airlines from baggage fees increased from $4.9 billion to $6.8 billion, the senator said. Airline CEOs in 2018 lobbied against bipartisan legislation to mandate “reasonable and proportional” baggage and change fees and convinced Congress to drop the plan. The US Transportation Department (DOT) last year proposed requiring airlines to disclose fees for baggage, ticket changes, and family seating the first time an airfare is displayed. It also proposed rules in 2021 to require airlines to refund fees for significantly delayed bags and refunds for services like onboard Wi-Fi that do not work. The department is scheduled to finalize both of those regulations in early 2024.
