MAY 25, 2022

Experts say that the majority of travel this Memorial Day holiday weekend will be done on the road and it’s beneficial to plan ahead, reports USA Today. Bob Pishue, an analyst for transportation data company INRIX, stated that more than eight times the number of people who will travel this weekend will do so by car, as opposed to air, train, and other types of travel. Similarly, automotive solutions provider Cars.com released survey results stating 82% of this holiday’s travel will be done by car. Thursday is predicted to be the busiest travel day overall, including such cities as Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, DC. Friday is predicted to be the busiest day for such cities as Detroit and Los Angeles; for both days, the most congested times are from 1:00-9:00 pm. Pishue stated that travel times are predicted to increase by 50% nationwide and drivers should plan for the extra congestion accordingly.

Spain has relaxed its entry requirements for international travelers originating from outside of the European Union (EU) and associated Schengen Area, including from the US and UK, reports Travel Pulse. As of May 21, travelers who aren’t fully vaccinated against COVID-19 can now enter the country by providing negative test results – either a PCR test taken within 72 hours of a person’s departure or an antigen test taken within 24 hours of departure. Previously, unvaccinated travelers from outside the EU could only gain entry by producing proof of their recent recovery from COVID-19; fully vaccinated travelers will continue to be able to present proof of vaccination for entry. Spanish Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, María Reyes Maroto, stated, “Spain is emerging as one of the most desired destinations in the world […] and this measure will speed up the recovery of the sector by facilitating the entry of international travelers.”

Delta Air Lines has launched its inaugural commercial flight of the Airbus A321neo narrowbody aircraft, featuring a newly designed first-class cabin, reports Business Travel News. The new first-class cabin has 20 seats that are 21 inches wide with 37 inches of pitch, complete with memory foam. Each seat is outfitted with 10-inch screens, a fixed headrest, a tray table with 25 percent more workspace, three times the storage for electronic devices, an in-arm water-bottle storage space, and large overhead bins. The new design also features an electronic outlet panel flush with each seat, eliminating the potential for cords to be in the way of passenger access to the aisle. In discussing the design, Delta VP of brand experience Mauricio Parise stated, "We really spent time with customers starting five years ago to understand what the needs are of a five- to six-hour flight in a domestic plane."

United Airlines has announced it will make several upgrades to its food and beverage offerings as it retires some pandemic-era procedures, reports Travel Weekly. As of June 1, United will reintroduce trayed meals in domestic first class on all flights that are longer than 800 miles. For mainline flights, the meals will include hot entrée choices, while cold plates will be offered on regional flights, replacing the packaged sandwich it has been serving during the pandemic. Additionally, United will resume coursed meal offerings in the Polaris business class of long-haul international flights on June 1; this includes a pre-meal snack and table linen service, followed by a plated entrée and dessert. With this announcement, United will join American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, which have also resumed domestic hot-meal service.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has added five countries to its ‘Level 3: High’ COVID-19 risk category warning list for travelers, reports Travel Pulse. As of Monday, the Bahamas, Montserrat, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean; the Central American nation of Belize; and the southern African nation of Eswatini are categorized as having over 100 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people over the past 28 days. In April, the CDC overhauled its Travel Health Notice system for foreign destinations. In terms of generalized risk of contracting COVID-19, Level 3 is now the highest label outside of special circumstances. Previously, Level 4 represented ‘Very High Risk’ for COVID-19; that label is now reserved for ‘Special Circumstances/Do Not Travel’ warnings. There are now approximately 115 of the world’s nations included under the CDC’s ‘Level 3: High’ warning, which recommends that individuals are up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations before travel to the destination.
