UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that fully vaccinated travelers from the United States and the European Union will be allowed to enter Britain without quarantining upon arrival beginning August 2, reports The Washington Post. Vaccinated US and EU travelers will only need to take a COVID-19 test before flying and then two days after arrival. They must also provide proof of inoculation with a vaccine authorized by the US or European agencies, UK transportation minister Grant Shapps added. Currently, travelers from the US must quarantine for 10 days, but can opt to take an additional COVID-19 test after day five to be released. Only those who have been vaccinated by Britain’s own health system are eligible for a “COVID pass” that would allow them to skip quarantine.

As the UK moves to lift quarantine restrictions for vaccinated US travelers, the US has not changed its stance on lifting any existing travel restrictions “at this point" due to the recent spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant in the US and around the world, reports Skift. Last week, the US Homeland Security Department said US land borders with Canada and Mexico will remain closed to non-essential travel until at least August 21, even as Canada said it would begin allowing in fully vaccinated American travelers starting August 9. The Biden administration has not offered any metrics that would trigger when it will loosen restrictions and has not disclosed if it will remove restrictions on individual countries. However, the Biden administration has been talking to US airlines about establishing international contact tracing for travelers before lifting travel restrictions. Back in early June, the White House launched interagency working groups with Britain, Canada, Mexico, and the EU to look at how eventually to lift travel and border restrictions.

Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the US State Department have issued their highest travel advisories for Portugal and Spain due to rising COVID-19 cases, reports Travel Pulse. The decision comes amid COVID-19 outbreaks occurring mostly among unvaccinated individuals, and while both organizations are encouraging people to avoid visiting, they have advised travelers to make sure that they are fully vaccinated if they must travel. Both Portugal and Spain have reopened to US travelers, with Spain no longer requiring proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result, and Portugal requiring visitors to show a recent negative test result or proof of recovery from the virus within the past 90 days. The recent travel advisories come just one week after US officials warned Americans to avoid travel to the UK due to rising cases of COVID-19.

With Canada reopening its borders to fully vaccinated US travelers on August 9, Delta Air Lines has announced that it is more than doubling the number of daily flights between the US and Canada starting in September. Delta plans to operate 19 flights, up from eight currently and an increase of 150 percent in terms of available seats. The carrier will increase operations to Calgary, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, as well as restarted service to Winnipeg. Toronto will see the largest increase, growing to 10 daily flights in September. Additionally, for the first time ever, four daily flights between New York’s LaGuardia Airport and Toronto will launch on September 13. To enter Canada, travelers will need to provide both proof of vaccination and a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of departure. To re-enter the US, travelers must provide proof of a negative test within 3 days of departure.

New data shows that airlines in the United States saw an increase in travelers for May, reports Travel Pulse. The US Department of Transportation (DOT) revealed that carriers around the country carried 56.6 million travelers in May 2021, an increase of around 19 percent when compared to April. The May totals were still an estimated 30 percent below the same month in 2019. The 56.6 million travelers transported is up more than 600 percent when compared to the eight million travelers served in May 2020. Earlier this month, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported that airport screening numbers have surpassed 2019 levels for the first time since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Southwest Airlines content has gone live in the Sabre global distribution system for corporate bookings, reports Travel Weekly. The move marks the first time Southwest content has been available on all three major GDSs, and gives corporate travelers and travel management companies (TMCs) easier access to the carrier's content. In May, vice president of Southwest business Dave Harvey said that TMCs would have access to 98% to 99% of Southwest content. Excluded content includes promotional sales that largely target leisure travel, such as discounted fares to Hawaii.
