US AIR, ROAD TRAFFIC NEARS PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS

Traffic at US airports and on toll roads reached 95 percent of third-quarter 2019 levels in the third quarter of 2022, reports Transportation Today. According to a recent report from Fitch Ratings, a credit ratings, commentary, and research provider, airport traffic improved by an average of 83 percent during the first quarter of 2022 and then 92 percent during the second quarter of the year. Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW), Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL), New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) exceeded pre-pandemic levels during September 2022. Compared to the third quarter of 2019, Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) are less than 90 percent recovered.

DELTA IS ADDING NEW ROUTES AROUND THE WORLD

Delta Air Lines will launch direct flights from Los Angeles to New Zealand and increase transatlantic service from its hubs in New York and Atlanta, reports Travel + Leisure. The flight between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Auckland will operate daily beginning October 28; with this route, Delta said it will be the only US carrier to directly link the two cities. Delta will also add a new daily flight from Atlanta to Nice, France, beginning May 12. The carrier will additionally increase service to several cities, including making its Atlanta to Tel Aviv, Israel, route daily beginning April 16 and adding a third daily route from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Paris, France, starting May 2. “With more than 1,750 weekly flights to 85 destinations around the globe this summer, Delta is well positioned to deliver on its plans to fully restore its network in 2023,” Joe Esposito, Delta’s SVP for Network Planning, said in a statement.

US VISA DELAYS SEES SOME REDUCTION

The US Travel Association has stated that global wait times for US visitor visas dropped below 150 days this January for the first time since 2021, reports Skift. However, they are higher than 400 days for Brazil, India, Mexico, and other top inbound visa-requiring markets (excluding China). In 2022, aspiring travelers from the top ten inbound countries outside the US Visa Waiver Program were unable to enter the country because they had to wait hundreds of days to get a visitor visa interview at their local US embassy. The primary reasons for the delays were inadequate processing staff and increased demand. The recent wait time reductions are due to the State Department’s new processing initiatives; for example, the department’s “Super Saturdays” initiative has had consulates and embassies remain open on Saturdays to process visas. The State Department anticipates interview wait times will fall to under 120 days with full staffing in its offices by the end of the 2023 fiscal year.

FAA SAYS HUMAN ERROR CAUSED THE NOTAM SYSTEM TO GO OFFLINE

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it is continuing its investigation into this month's system-wide outage but noted preliminary findings suggest it was caused by human error, reports USA Today. On January 11, the FAA's Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system went offline temporarily; as a result, pilots could not receive necessary safety information ahead of their flights and the agency halted airline departures nationwide, causing more than 10,000 delays and cancellations. "A preliminary FAA review of last week’s outage of the Notice to Air Missions system determined that contract personnel unintentionally deleted files while working to correct synchronization between the live primary database and a backup database" an FAA statement said. "The agency has so far found no evidence of a cyberattack or malicious intent. The FAA continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the outage." Many experts and airline executives are now calling on Congress to provide the FAA with additional funding to update some of the older technologies it relies on, including within the NOTAM system.

NASA, BOEING PARTNER TO DEVELOP GREENER AIRCRAFT FOR AVIATION’S FUTURE

NASA has announced a partnership with The Boeing Company for its Sustainable Flight Demonstrator project, which aims to develop a new generation of low-emission, single-aisle jetliners, reports Travel Pulse. Through a new Funded Space Act Agreement, Boeing will work alongside NASA experts to design, construct, and test a full-scale demonstrator aircraft, which will allow designers to validate new technologies for reducing emissions. The aim is for the project to reach completion by the late 2020s, so that the prototype can inform the aviation sector's decisions in designing the next generation of single-aisle aircraft. NASA’s goal is that the technologies tested for this project, in conjunction with other advancements in propulsion systems and materials, could reduce emissions by up to 30 percent, in comparison with today’s most efficient single-aisle aircraft.
