US AIRFARE CONTINUED TO DROP IN JULY

The average price for a domestic roundtrip air ticket in July was $528, a 5 percent decrease both year over year and month over month, reports Business Travel News. According to Airline Reporting Corporation's (ARC) monthly report, this is the fourth month in a row with a year-over-year decline. Meanwhile, July US air ticket sales improved 11 percent year over year to nearly $7.6 billion, boosted by a 16 percent increase in international trips. Total domestic trips increased 7 percent year over year and increased 1 percent month over month. "US air travel demand remains strong as consumers prioritize traveling this summer and into the fall," ARC chief commercial officer Steve Solomon said. "While international travel growth has outpaced domestic for much of 2023, July's results are an encouraging sign for US airlines."

TELOS CORPORATION BECOMES TSA’S SECOND OFFICIAL TSA PRECHECK ENROLLMENT PROVIDER

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced that it is expanding TSA PreCheck® with Telos Corporation, which is now offering TSA PreCheck enrollment services at 10 locations. Telos originally began a pilot program in Annapolis, MD; Chantilly & Ashburn, VA; and Las Vegas, NV. The company will now expand enrollment services nationally, offering new locations with expanded hours of operation. “Telos is excited to make TSA PreCheck enrollments accessible to more people where they live, work, and shop with the launch of Telos as an authorized enrollment provider,” said Telos Chief Executive Officer John B. Wood. TSA Administrator David Pekoske added, “This expansion of enrollment providers will increase the network of locations where applicants may go to complete their TSA PreCheck membership.” According to the TSA, PreCheck members may renew their memberships online with Telos or IDEMIA (TSA PreCheck’s original enrollment provider), regardless of who they enrolled with initially.

EUROPE’S AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER SHORTAGE DELAYS FLIGHTS, SLOWS RECOVERY

A shortage of air traffic controllers across Europe is contributing to an increase in flight delays that are affecting travelers and airlines across the continent, reports Skift. Air traffic flow management (ATFM) related delays — or when air traffic is limited through a certain area of the sky — were the second largest contributor to flight delays in June and July. The duration of these delays increased 6% from last year with airline-specific issues being the number one cause. At the same time, air traffic — measured in number of flights — was up 7% year-over-year in June and July. European air traffic organizations, which are often run by individual countries, are roughly 700 to 1,000 controllers short of target staffing levels. “We do have a shortage of controllers in Europe,” International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations (IFATCA) Executive Vice President Frederic Deleau said. “It’s not as critical as in New York, or in Canada.” Deleau said too little recruitment during the past decade, plus early retirement packages offered to some controllers during the pandemic, contributed to the current situation. The situation is likely to ease this fall when airlines typically schedule fewer flights following the summer peak. “There are no magical tricks at the moment,” Deleau said of the situation. He estimated that it will take at least 3-4 years to ease the shortage of air traffic controllers in Europe.

AMTRAK ORDERS MORE AIRO TRAINSETS TO MEET SURGING DEMAND

Amtrak has announced that it has ordered ten additional Airo trainsets to meet surging demands, bringing the total to 83 trainsets. The first Amtrak Airo trainset is scheduled to debut in 2026 and operate on routes throughout the country. The Airo trainsets, which consist of both locomotive and passenger carriages, will modernize Amtrak’s fleet across the country, with greater comfort for travelers, more space for luggage, and a greater focus on sustainability, producing 90 percent fewer emissions than on traditional diesel trains. The new trains will also have better accessibility features including larger bathrooms, vestibules, and café cars. Those with hearing impairments will have access to inductive hearing technology for onboard announcements. The Airo trainsets will be rolled out across several different routes, including the Northeast Regional, Empire Service, Virginia Services, Keystone Service, Downeaster, Cascades, Maple Leaf, New Haven/Springfield Service, Palmetto, Carolinian, Pennnsylvanian, Vermonter, Ethan Allen Express, and Adirondack.

AIRLINES CUT FALL FLIGHT SCHEDULE TO MAUI AMID WILDFIRE RECOVERY

US Airlines are reducing flights to Maui this fall in the wake of the recent wildfires, reports Travel Pulse. United Airlines has dramatically cut its flight schedule by over 50 percent from the mainland US to Maui for September and October as the island recovers. American Airlines has also made significant changes by removing 50 flights and almost 10,000 seats between Los Angeles and Kahului for September and cutting the route in half for October by removing 31 flights in each direction and more than 13,000 seats. In addition, Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, and Southwest Airlines are also making changes and are likely to continue to adjust their schedules amid reduced demand.
