US AIRLINES SUSPEND FLIGHTS TO ISRAEL AS STATE DEPARTMENT URGES CAUTION

US airlines have suspended flights to and from Tel Aviv amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, reports USA Today. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines have also issued travel waivers allowing travelers scheduled to fly to and from Israel to rebook. United’s waiver also covers flights to and from Amman, Jordan. Delta said it is suspending operations to and from Israel through October 31, while American is suspending Tel Aviv service until December 5. United said its flights will remain suspended "until conditions allow them to resume." According to the Department of Transportation regulations, travelers who have flights canceled by a US airline are entitled to a full refund even if they bought a non-refundable ticket. In addition, the State Department has issued travel advisories for the region. A Travel Advisory “Level 2-Exercise Increased Caution” remains for Israel and the West Bank, both “due to terrorism and civil unrest.” Gaza has been placed at “Level 4-Do Not Travel” due to “terrorism, civil unrest, and armed conflict.” Travelers can visit the State Department’s website for the most updated information.

DELTA, LATAM ADD 6 NEW ROUTES TO SOUTH AMERICA

Delta Air Lines and LATAM alliance have announced that they have expanded their partnership by adding six new routes and increasing current routes. Delta and LATAM have already launched new service between Orlando and Bogota, Colombia; and between Los Angeles and São Paulo, Brazil, the only direct route between Brazil and the US West Coast. Beginning October 29, the partners will launch new routes and increase current routes with new Medellin-Miami service; LATAM’s new service between Lima and Atlanta, adding to Delta’s existing service; and Delta’s second frequency between Atlanta and Bogota, adding to its existing service. The introduction of the routes continues in December, with Atlanta-Cartagena on December 22 and seasonal service between New York JFK and Rio de Janeiro on December 16. In response to growing demand, Delta’s seasonal service between Atlanta and Rio de Janeiro (returning December 16) will operate year-round. Delta and LATAM expect to continue announcing new routes and greater benefits in the coming months to enhance the travel experience for those traveling between North America and South America.

LAX OPENS TERMINAL-TO-TERMINAL ACCESS

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has opened Terminal 3 and the Tom Bradley International Terminal connector to expand pedestrian access across the airport’s eight terminals, reports Airport Technology. The recent connectivity efforts follow modernization attempts, which will be further boosted through the introduction of automated people movers and pedestrian bridges in 2024. This bridge forms part of a $15 billion capital improvement program which is set to be completed by 2027. These infrastructure improvements will significantly improve access at LAX in time for the 2028 Olympics. Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) president Karim Webb expressed the economic advantages of the terminal access expansion project saying, “While we modernize LAX to greatly elevate our guests’ experiences, we are also advancing economic opportunities for the airport’s neighbors and the greater Southern California region. The projects that now allow passengers to go between terminals post-security also provided jobs for over 7,000 local workers, equaling over half a billion dollars in wages for these individuals. The roughly two-mile end-to-end connection from Terminal 1 to Terminal 8 will continue to foster career pathways for our local community by supporting the expansion of operations and concessions roles.”

AEROMEXICO PLANS US ROUTE EXPANSION

Aeromexico, now free of FAA restrictions, plans to introduce 17 US routes in 2024, reports Travel Weekly. Aeromexico's joint venture partner, Delta, will codeshare on the flights. The announcement follows the FAA's restoration of Mexico's Category 1 safety rating for civil aviation. For the previous 28 months, Mexican airlines weren't allowed to add US routes or frequencies since the FAA had relegated Mexico to Category 2 status. Aeromexico's new US routes will include a combined six from Mexico City's two airports, four from Monterrey, two from Guadalajara, two from Leon, two from Queretaro, and one from the Yucatan capital of Merida. No launch dates have been set and tickets are not yet on sale. Aeromexico said that by July it will operate 60 daily flights to the US, up 35% from this year. The new routes will focus on Delta hubs, facilitating connections. Delta is planning to operate 34 daily flights to Mexico next July, serving seven Mexican destinations. Overall, the Aeromexico-Delta partnership plans to fly 30% more seats between the US and Mexico next July.

AMTRAK AIMS TO DOUBLE RIDERSHIP IN UNDER 20 YEARS

Amtrak aims to double its ridership in under 20 years by using funds from the 2021 infrastructure bill to make it happen, reports Travel Pulse. Funds are being used to make improvements at some of its biggest and most popular hubs, with the intention of bringing a whole new life to the national railroad company. Those include train stations in Baltimore, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. In August, Amtrak ordered ten more Airo trainsets as part of its modernization efforts, bringing the total to 83 trainsets, which are expected to first debut in 2026. The Amtrak Airo trainsets, which consist of both locomotive and passenger carriages, will modernize Amtrak’s fleet across the country, with greater comfort for travelers, more space for luggage, and a greater focus on sustainability, producing 90 percent fewer particulate emissions than on traditional diesel trains.
