US AIRPORTS GET NEARLY $1B IN FEDERAL FUNDS FOR MODERNIZATION
The federal government is granting a $970M investment to US airports in an effort to
improve baggage systems, security checkpoints, and more, reports Travel and Leisure. According to the US Department of Transportation (DOT), more than 100 airports across 44 states and three territories were awarded the new funding. Each airport intends to use their allocated funds for different projects. For example, Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) will receive $35M to help construct a 14-gate, 400,000-square-foot terminal building, while Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) will use its $20M investment to fund part of its Concourse B terminal expansion. Other major hubs like Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), Denver International Airport (DEN), and Duluth International Airport (DLH) are preparing to deploy their given funds in similar fashions. “Under this administration, we are doing more to improve the travel experience than ever before, from expanding consumer protections to modernizing the physical infrastructure,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said. “These investments…will make it easier for passengers to get to and through airports, create jobs, and increase safety for all.”

AMERICAN ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO HOW TRAVELERS EARN MILES AND LOYALTY POINTS
American Airlines has announced that it will be changing the way travelers earn AAdvantage® miles and loyalty points on flights through different booking channels. Starting with tickets issued on May 1, 2024, travelers will earn miles and Loyalty Points on flights when they:
- Book directly with American and eligible partner airlines.
- Book travel anywhere as an AAdvantage Business™ member or contracted corporate traveler.
- Book through preferred travel agencies. American will share a list of eligible preferred agencies on their website in late April.
Basic Economy fare tickets will only earn miles and loyalty points when booked directly with American and eligible partner airlines. For more information about which bookings will earn miles and which bookings will not, visit https://aa.com/earnonflights.
Additionally, American has adjusted bag fees for first and second checked bags for travel booked on or after February 20. The new bag fees for domestic flights including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands are $35 for first checked bags purchased online or $40 for first checked bags purchased at the airport. The second checked bag fee is $45 purchased online or at the airport. The new bag fees for Canada and short-haul international flights are $35 for first checked bags and $45 for second checked bags purchased online or at the airport.

ARC: JANUARY US-BASED AIR SALES SET RECORD
According to Business Travel News, US-based air ticket sales surpassed a new January record equating to a total of $8.9 billion. This represents a 6.9 percent increase year-over-year and a 54.8 percent increase from December 2023. Total passenger trips for January were up 7.3 percent year-over-year to nearly 25.7 million, which also represents a 52.5 percent increase month-over-month. US domestic trips totaled nearly 16 million, an 8 percent increase over January 2023 and a 58.1 percent increase from December 2023. International trips exceeded 9.7 million, representing a 6.1 year-over-year uptick and a 44 percent increase month-over-month. "January's results represent a promising start to air travel in 2024 as we approach the first busy travel period," ARC Chief Commercial Officer Steve Solomon said. "Business travel also had a solid month with corporate travel agency settled trips increasing 7 percent year-over-year."

FAA RELEASES NEW CARBON POLLUTION REDUCTION RULE
In an effort to reduce carbon pollution, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a new set of regulations for most large airplanes flying in US airspace, reports Travel Pulse. The new FAA rule requires incorporating improved fuel-efficient technologies for airplanes manufactured after January 1, 2028, and does not apply to aircraft currently in service. The carbon pollution reduction rule, deemed the Airplane Fuel Efficiency Certification, comes as a result of FAA data indicating that commercial airplanes are responsible for nine percent of domestic transportation emissions and two percent of total carbon pollution in America. “We are taking a large step forward to ensure the manufacture of more fuel-efficient airplanes, reduce carbon pollution, and reach our goal of net-zero emissions by 2050,” FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker said. The agency’s latest action is part of the US Aviation Climate Action Plan that aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from the aviation sector in America by 2050.
