US SCREENS HIGHEST NUMBER OF AIR TRAVELERS SINCE 2019

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said that it screened 2.785 million air travelers on Friday, June 16, the highest number since before the COVID-19 pandemic, reports Reuters. The TSA screened approximately 10.6 million people from Friday through Monday, the Juneteenth holiday, giving an average of 2.67 million people per day. Airlines reported few cancellations over the holiday period and the TSA said Friday was the fourth-highest single-day for screenings ever and the highest since November 2019. The post-COVID 19 rebound is expected to continue throughout the summer, with industry group Airlines for America estimating a record 256.8 million travelers will fly in the June-August period, up 1% over the 254.6 million travelers in the same period in 2019.

SUMMER TO SEE RECORD NUMBER OF TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHTS FROM US TO EUROPE

Air travel intelligence company OAG Aviation has released a market analysis of the summer season’s record-setting figures for Transatlantic flights between the US and Western Europe, with more than 111,400 scheduled flights inbound from Western Europe to the US, equivalent to about 530 per day, and presumably a similar amount headed in the opposite direction each day, reports Travel Pulse. the 111,400 scheduled flights is nearly a 30 percent increase from the number of Transatlantic flights flown a decade ago. OAG stated that air travel between the US and Europe was among the first long-haul markets to recover post-pandemic, with most airlines adding those routes back as soon as possible. OAG also examined the number of airport pairs for routes between the US and Western Europe. Looking at the UK as an example, it noted that there are now 13 fewer pairs being operated this summer, versus the 2019 season. Yet, the overall number of scheduled flights has grown by close to five percent. The firm explained that, following a major disruption like the pandemic, airlines will generally drop lower-frequency routes and revert back to their core networks, which explains this summer’s 14 percent increase in flights between London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

US TRAVEL EASES FORECAST OF CORPORATE TRAVEL RECOVERY

The US Travel Association projects that the number of domestic US business trips will fully recover to 2019 levels in 2025, with inflation-adjusted domestic business travel spending not to recover before 2027, reports Business Travel News. The association expects 414 million domestic business trips in 2023, a figure that would represent an 11.7 percent year-over year increase but still short of the 464 million recorded in 2019. The figure is also lower than the 417 million trips projected by US Travel for 2023 in its prior forecast in November. As for inflation-adjusted spending, US Travel projects $254 billion on domestic business travel in 2023, a figure that is forecasted to increase to $282 billion in 2026, still shy of the $306 billion recorded in 2019. In November, US Travel had projected $259 billion in domestic business travel spending in 2023. US Travel noted that "domestic business travel is expected to grow—albeit more slowly—largely due to economic conditions."

UNITED PLANS TO DEPLOY AIR TAXIS IN SAN FRANCISCO BY 2026

United Airlines and Eve Air Mobility plan to bring air taxi commuter flights to the San Francisco Bay Area by 2026, reports Travel Weekly. The Bay Area is the third announced market for United's intended use of air taxis and the first with Eve. United, in partnership with Archer Aviation, previously announced in November 2022 that its first air taxi route would be between New York's Manhattan heliport and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), with service to begin in 2025. Earlier this year, United named Chicago for its second air taxi route with Archer, also expected to debut in 2025. The carrier has invested $15 million in Eve Air Mobility in a deal that included the conditional purchase of 200 four-seat electric aircraft plus 200 options. That investment followed United's $10 million deposit to Archer Aviation for 100 of that company's electric aircraft.
