United Way of Greater Plymouth County’s Annual Coat Initiative “Warmer Winters” Raises $17,000 to Purchase Winter Coats for Children
|
|
|
United Way of Greater Plymouth County recently generated funds for its 7th Annual "United Way Warmer Winters” initiative to purchase warm jackets for local children in need in Greater Plymouth County. Since 2015, this initiative has helped over 1,475 children to keep warm.
Generous donations were received this year from Beth Israel Deaconess Plymouth, Bluestone Bank, Commonwealth Alternative Care, Good Samaritan Medical Center, Macy’s, McGovern Automotive Group, Target, Whitman Homes, Rosemary Healy, Michael McCarthy, Rick and Maryanne Noll in honor of Walter L. Noll Jr. and Jean T. Noll, Cheryl Showstack, and Dr. Joyce Siogros Pepi. With funds from the Hurley Trust and with these compassionate donations, United Way was able to allocate $17,450 to help low-income children in Greater Plymouth County. “As we all know, this year has been extremely challenging for our younger neighbors and we also wanted to increase our efforts this year for our 100th anniversary. We are continually thrilled to see the community come together to support our ‘Warmer Winters’ initiative,” said United Way President & CEO Dennis Carman, “Thanks to our generous donors, we have been able to provide children with 380 new coats this winter.”
The funds to purchase coats were donated to The Arc of Greater Brockton, The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South, Brockton Day Nursery, The Family Center at Community Connections of Brockton, Family & Community Resources, Father Bill’s & MainSpring, Health Imperatives, and the Salvation Army of Brockton. To see more photos that will continue to be shared in United Way’s Warmer Winters series, please visit www.facebook.com/uwgpc.

Historical Tidbit:
Federal Government Civics
How a bill becomes a law.
The Bill Is Voted On in the U.S. House of Representatives.
If a majority of the Representatives vote yes, the bill passes in the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill is then certified by the Clerk of the House and delivered to the U.S. Senate.
When a bill reaches the U.S. Senate. The Senate Majority Leader calls for votes in the Senate. The bill is discussed in a Senate committee and then reported to the Senate floor to be voted on.
If a majority of the Senators say “yea,” the bill passes in the U.S. Senate and is ready to go to the President.
When a bill reaches the President, he has three choices. He can:
Sign and pass the bill—the bill becomes a law.
Refuse to sign, or veto, the bill—the bill is sent back to the U.S. House of Representatives, along with the President’s reasons for the veto. If the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate still believe the bill should become a law, they can hold another vote on the bill. If two-thirds of the Representatives and Senators support the bill, the President’s veto is overridden and the bill becomes a law.
Do nothing (pocket veto)—if Congress is in session, the bill automatically becomes law after 10 days. If Congress is not in session, the bill does not become a law.
If a bill has passed in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate and has been approved by the President, or if a presidential veto has been overridden, the bill becomes a law and is enforced by the government.

The Homeless Improvement Project, now located off L Street, in the basement of Brockton Central United Methodist Church.
According to their website: "the Homeless Improvement Project (HIP) is a collaboration of homeless adults living in Brockton, and committed area residents who are not homeless. HIP's vision, with the guiding hand of Rev. Roberto Silviera is to motivate the homeless community to take control of their lives in positive ways. Its chief goals are to see every homeless adult (1) living in permanent housing, (2) leading fulfilling lives that include efforts to help others and (3) working in solid, decent paying jobs." Currently you can find them putting their vision into action, Monday - Friday, 7:30a - 4p. Amazing work.

Ingenuity
As NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter makes it's 19th flight, aiding the Perseverance rover in path planning and scientific discovery on Mars, let's take a moment to ponder the meaning of the word: " Ingenuity".
Ingenuity, noun, the quality of being clever, original, inventive.
In a sentence: "Arya used ingenuity in creating her solutions."
Let's hear some quotes:
“I see this as the central issue of our time: how to find a substitute for war in human ingenuity, imagination, courage, sacrifice, patience..." ~ Howard Zinn
“If you remove adversity, you remove ingenuity and creativity with it. There is no need to strive to make something beautiful or better if it already is.”
~ Ilona Andrews, Magic Binds
“You won't change anything significant in the world if you try to be like it. Change comes when you do something different.”
~ Shannon L. Alder
"Ingenuity, plus courage, plus work, equals miracles." ~ Bob Richards
And my favorite: "Much ingenuity with a little money is vastly more profitable and amusing than much money without ingenuity." ~ Arnold Bennett
|
Ingenuity will help us piece together solutions using what we have. I am excited to hear your ideas. Have a great week. ~ Jacquie
