A rich new collection of oil paintings on panel alongside masterful works on paper in pastel, watercolour, and ink awaits at the gallery this spring. Spanning a delightful variety of scales, these pieces capture the artist's recent journeys — intimate glimpses of his own Hamilton backyard garden giving way to the rugged seascapes of Nova Scotia's east coast and the luminous shores of Indonesia.

"Field trips — everything starts with those, whether in my garden or somewhere else," reflects the artist. He adds, from his 2024 solo exhibition The Resonant Moment, "To be properly in the moment and able to respond to what's in front of me, in the field or the studio, is the key to everything.”
This commitment to immediacy shines through: broad, confident brushstrokes and lines reduce vistas, coastal landscapes, and intimate panoramas to their happiest, most essential forms — vibrant blocks of colour, dynamic shapes, and liberated gestures that evoke the joy of being fully present in nature's ever-changing scenes.

Barry Hodgson, born in 1954 in Vineland Station, Ontario, earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from the University of Guelph in 1978. Long represented by Ingram Gallery — over 35 years and counting — he stands in esteemed company, echoing the pared-down elegance of the radical simplicity, and reduced forms of the greats of Minimalism. His travels across Canada's diverse terrains have long informed his minimal yet richly evocative style, and this exhibition beautifully bridges the near-at-hand with the exotic, reminding us that inspiration awaits in every vista, no matter how close or distant.

Recipient of numerous grants, awards, and critical acclaim, Hodgson's works grace important public collections nationwide, including the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Art Gallery of Guelph, and Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo. He lives and works in Hamilton, Ontario, ever reflecting on the pulse of his surroundings.

All works are treated with the artist’s custom hand-crafted frames.
