INGRAM GALLERY

Greetings!

Marking David Michael Scott’s first solo exhibition with Ingram Gallery, still life is a study of the artist’s command of technique and contemplative nature. Be part of opening day and meet Scott at the gallery for his reception on Saturday, October 5 from 1pm to 3pm. The collection documents decades of the artist’s life and works. All manners of mark-making paired with his moving subject matter make for a visual feast of masterpieces.

DAVID MICHAEL SCOTT

still life

October 5 - 30 . 2024

Opening Reception with the Artist:

Saturday, October 5 | 1pm to 3pm

Scott pulls the viewer into a stillness where subject matter and medium are one. When we are still we can see more. When things are still we can see them better. When both are still our awareness grows.

The Hunt Camp - graphite, 10 x 11 inches

still life is a tailored collection of over thirty works. An artist is an artist from the moment they come to be. A work of art is alive eternally. The collection features graphite drawings, watercolours, monotypes, gouache and oil paintings. Working through Scott's devotion to line quality and decision making, the exhibition provides a lens on what is there and what is not.

Please be in touch to preview the collection and to receive the exhibition catalogue.

Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird XII - watercolour, 9 x 10 inches

Butterfly Procession - watercolour, 13.5 x 10.25 inches

Living a considered life, the life of an artist, Scott is passionate about art history and the stories and achievements of past creators. Drawing as example from his appreciation for the transcendent line quality of Egon Schiele (Austrian, 1890-1918), Scott is equally inspired by the metaphors at play in the genius oeuvre of Toronto’s own Christiane Pflug (1936-1972). Scott’s mindfulness of the greats before him informs his practice and complements his unique vision.

Figure with Flowers - oil on canvas, 34 x 46 inches

The idea that a person creates their essence over their lifetime, never truly being fully formed or finished is the very nature of existence. Scott looks to his wife as existential muse. Through a series of sublime figure studies into grand oils of his partner, the mother of his son, Scott presents homage to the light that is life, that is love.

Figure Study III - graphite, 8.25 x 12.25 inches

“In the process of making the picture - especially because they can take so long to complete - many different possible meanings rise to the surface, which is one of the most interesting parts of picture making for me.”

― David Michael Scott

Citing literary greats, philosophers and fables of the past century, Scott’s titles pay tribute to the likes of Wallace Stevens, Albert Camus, and Charles Bukowski along with adept visual quotes of the works of Edgar Degas and Hans Holbein.

Wintering - oil on masonite, 8.5 x 8.5 inches

There’s a word for what I am experiencing: Wintering. Maybe you’re feeling it too — in search of deeply meaningful living.

David Michael Scott was born in 1964 in Toronto, Ontario. He first exhibited professionally in a solo capacity at the young age of 17. Daily studio time for the artist is a must. His works are found in collections throughout North America. Scott studied figure drawing at the Ontario College of Art in the late 1980s. He lives and works in Toronto with his wife Sonya, son Delacroix, and dog Maisy.

"The really meaningful motivations are subconscious and over time - could be years after finishing a piece - I can see meanings and metaphors I wasn't aware of when I was working on whatever piece."

― David Michael Scott

Horse Skeleton - monotype, 14 x 14 inches

still life is dedicated to the memory of

Gary Low (1948-2023)

beloved friend of the artist and gallery.

At The End of Feet The Blackbird Walks - gouache, 6.75 x 10 inches

Autumn is here and the light is superb. The sun is lower on the horizon, casting the beautiful glow that we associate with the season. In the weeks ahead, a visit to the gallery promises an edifying and meaningful art experience with David Michael Scott’s still life on view though until October 30. Join the artist in art and conversation at the gallery Saturday, October 5, 1pm to 3pm.
