Greetings!
It has been an exceptional year of solo exhibitions and programming. We are grateful and keep the pace this month at the gallery with the joyful return of our community collaboration with Gardiner Museum’s Gardiner Shop Holiday Pop Up. Now open and continuing through until the new year, this exciting event delivers beauty in a multitude of materials and forms.
With newly available works arriving each week from artists’ studios here in the city and from across the country, there is much to explore and consider on your next visit. Complementing the art, the gallery holds a wealth of treasures for all. Great books on art in Canada and Canadian artists, Folk art, and unexpected curiosities means there is something for every collector and art appreciator. Viewing paintings and ceramic artworks in the same space offers a unique and multifaceted experience that combines the strengths and aesthetics of both art forms. When viewed together, this visual conversation enhances our perception of colour and surface, providing a rich sensory experience.

The curation of ceramics and glass alongside wall-hung paintings has transformed the gallery's spatial dynamics, creating a more immersive environment. Grounded by the solidity of ceramics and inspired by the expansiveness of paintings, visitors can engage with art in a more physical manner.

ANJA KARISIK
Anja Karisik is known for her pastels and oil paintings, particularly her marine landscapes and stunning vistas. Her works reflect themes of nature's vitality and the interplay between sky and earth. On feature at the gallery are three canvases from her Surfacing series. Karisik’s imagery of rocks surfacing through snow pulls from a rich tapestry of symbolism, representing endurance, the revelation of truth, and the balance found in nature's art.

“If truth is that which lasts, then art has proved truer than any other human endeavour. What is certain is that pictures and poetry and music are not only marks in time but marks through time, of their own time and ours, not antique or historical, but living as they ever did, exuberantly, untired.”

VLAD GROSPIC
| |
Vlad Grospic Song of the Lake - oil on canvas on panel, 24 x 24 inches
Vlad Grospic The Moment After - oil on canvas on panel, 24 x 24 inches
Visually engaging and intellectually stimulating, the new paintings of Vlad Grospic are unique for their palette and high saturation. His ability to transform the ordinary into something extraordinary, engages our senses, emotions, and imagination. Primarily working in oil, Grospic’s brings an intense, vibrant quality to his subject matter, making it feel alive. Conveying the energy of a place adds a dynamic layer to his work. Enhancing the contrast between different elements in the landscape gives a sense of depth. Shadows become more pronounced, and the interplay of light and colour creates a dramatic, three-dimensional effect.
RACHEL BERMAN (1946-2014)
| |
Rachel Berman Vangogh's Room at Arles - oil on masonite, 25.5 x 34.5 inches
A newly available Rachel Berman (1946-2014) oil painting has arrived. As often in her work, and as a true artist’s artist, she elevated and celebrated fellow creators. In Vangogh’s Room at Arles, 1999 (above) Berman pays tribute to the photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, as well as Matisse and more obviously with the title — Vincent van Gogh himself. Hinting at the personal lives of artists, Berman plays off of the iconic Cartier-Bresson photograph of Henri Matisse in his home taken in 1944 while depicting a close friend in the role of Matisse.
With an equal eye for the art of letters, Berman has collaged one of her poems to the verso of the painting — in moon palace,1999:

I’ve been tracing
pentimento lines
they are
truth
a child born of instinct
They are the
stars that shine into my eyes
they know which way
wind Blows
they know life will be different
so will the World
