The fires that are now a predictable part of an Okanagan summer are on my mind while I paint. You can see the pentimento of the landscape with which I usually begin my compositions: fish jumping, swimming ladders, waterlilies, and of course, trees.
The fires have ravaged the landscape, but I am not painting the destruction they leave behind. I'm painting the water. I'm painting the lake, the fire pond, and the mouth of the creek where the high water drowns the willows. I'm painting resilience and hope.
I'm painting a prayer for rain.
