As we prepare for all ahead, our recent days have been highlighted with time together in studio with artists Sean Yelland and Anja Karisik. Yelland sets the Solo Exhibition Series in motion opening his thirteenth solo with the gallery on March 1. Following, Karisik marks her first solo exhibition at the gallery with Strata of Memory opening May 3. Purposeful and timely, the artists’ collections rise to reflect who they are and where they are.
There is much to discover in this new issue — from Sean Yelland’s upcoming solo, to brand new works from Jane Everett, Anja Karisik and Luke Pestl. Our beloved collaboration continues with Gardiner Museum’s Gardiner Shop with New Year in Art on now at the gallery.
SEAN YELLAND
End of the Rainbow
March 1 - 29, 2025
| |
SEAN YELLAND Tombstone for a Dying City - oil on canvas, 48.5 x 40 inches
With a remarkable eye, Sean Yelland captures scenes that are typically bustling with activity in states of stillness. Within this quietude, the emotional depth of Yelland’s paintings emerge offering a window of reflection into the artist’s personal experience and feelings. Yelland resonates with local audiences by portraying familiar cityscapes in a way that feels both personal and universally relatable.
End of the Rainbow marks the next chapter in Sean Yelland’s distinguished career. Yelland builds on the beauty and success of his most recent collections: The Long Way Home at Madrona Gallery in 2024 and What’s the point? at Ingram Gallery in 2022.
ANJA KARISIK
Strata of Memory
May 3 - 23, 2025
| |
ANJA KARISIK Rocks at Sunset Point Beach - oil & acrylic on panel, 9 x 12 inches
The works of Anja Karisik reflect her deep connection to nature, focusing on landscapes that evoke a sense of place and the perennial wisdom found in nature's structures. Exploring themes of transition and the interplay between memory and the environment, Karisik pulls inspiration from childhood experiences by the sea and walks along the Humber River and in the Annex here in Toronto.
A collection of new paintings have freshly arrived at the gallery. The artist is in studio creating for her solo exhibition ahead this May, with words to share as the collection takes shape:
“This shift from distance to proximity mirrors the way we remember. An abstract recollection suddenly gives way to detail - scent, texture, sound - that brings the past into focus. As I painted, I thought about how memories accumulate, building strata over time, just as sediment layers create the rock formations I’ve captured in many of my paintings. Layers shape both landscapes and lives. Memory gives landscapes meaning.”

One of the most compelling aspects of ceramics is the transformation process. From a malleable lump of clay to a solid, lasting object through the mysterious alchemy of fire, ceramics embody change and permanence. The firing process, where clay turns into ceramic through heat, is almost magical, making each piece a testament to the artist's control over the elements.
Ceramics can take on almost any form, as beautifully captured in the newest Gardiner Shop collection. This versatility allows for endless artistic expression, where form, function, and aesthetics intersect in innovative ways. We are delighted to highlight this group of wonderfully talented artists.
Please be in touch for further information on all artists and works featured here as well as for the full exhibition catalogue.

JANE EVERETT Marsh V - oil on canvas, 36 x 60 inches
The paintings of Jane Everett evoke a sense of calm and tranquility. The artist thoughtfully engages with her subject matter, offering both beauty and a commentary on environmental and human interaction. Her work continues to be noted for its depth, technique, and theory. Her waterscape paintings, which verge on the abstract, are created through the complex layering of colour, capturing the undulating surface of water in an intricate study of light.
Be sure to visit and experience Everett’s Pink Sky at Morning V, a glorious large-scale triptych on view now as part of our current main gallery installation.

JANE EVERETT First Light I - oil on board, 16 x 20 inches
LUKE PESTL Worlds Away - white stoneware, 20 x 19 x 20 inches
Based in Toronto and Nova Scotia, Luke Pestl has carved out a unique space in contemporary ceramics by drawing inspiration from both urban landscapes and rural coastal environments.
His approach to ceramics is not just about creating art but also about exploring the interaction between materials and the stories they can tell. His newest collection takes us into the garden and through it, to pieces that can be enjoyed as part of it.
"If we surrendered to earth’s intelligence, we could rise up rooted, like trees.”
