A message from our President
Lisa Wright, M.Div., CFRE
Hello Friends,

Inland SoCal United Way unites people, ideas, and resources to empower our community and improve lives. By focusing on the education, financial stability, health, and housing of all people in the Inland Southern California region we help to build communities where people can thrive.
Our region has grown rapidly in the last ninety years, and we have seen many successes. Inland SoCal United Way has been there every step of the way, fighting to make every resident’s life better. But there is still much to be done. That is why we invite you to join us for our 90th Anniversary Gala, “Imagining Tomorrow’s World Today.” Sponsorship opportunities and tables are going fast. Reserve yours today for a night of fun, entertainment, and the possibility of what we can all build together for our region’s future. Visit imaginetheie.com to learn more.

Thank you for all that you do,
Lisa

Our monthly Impact Spotlight presents key indicators of community needs based on our interactions with individuals and families who connect with us through the 2-1-1 multi-channel contact center over the previous month.
STORIES FROM THE COMMUNITY
BRUCE: RIDE UNITED
Bruce called 211 a few times. After moving to California from out of state, he had no transportation or housing, which were barriers to accessing health-related services. Using our United Ride program, we were able to assist him by providing transportation to his most recent health appointment. We were also able to find shelter and assist him in applying for housing so he could continue rebuilding his life in our community.
NATALIE: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND 211
Natalie was frantic when she called 211 and needed help. She asked for 211 to help contact law enforcement. Her husband is a regular drug abuser with access to weapons and she feared for her safety. There were challenges with the phone connection, and her call dropped. The 211 Community Resource Advisor had yet to get an address. The advisor tried calling Natalie with the number that appeared on the caller identification, but the call went to voicemail. The advisor continued to try and contact her. Within a few minutes, they were able to connect. 211 connected her with law enforcement, and they dispatched help to her location. The advisor stayed on the phone with Natalie to provide support until law enforcement arrived.
LIVE UNITED STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Meet Christopher Darbee, Director of Data and Outreach
Chris Darbee is the Director of Data and Outreach for Inland SoCal 211+. He oversees the data analytics and resources at the 211 Contact Center, Helpline, and other programs. Additionally, his team performs outreach for programs and services to ensure residents know which resources are available to meet their needs.
Chris holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a Master of Public Health. He grew up playing sports, including football, and his only knowledge of United Way was the marketing through United Way’s partnership with the NFL. Following his passion for sports he had planned to become a physical therapist; however, after having children, he wanted to ensure he had time to support their development and felt a change in focus was necessary. He used his interest in sports and health to focus on the social determinates of health and health disparities. This led him to Inland SoCal 211+ and our work eliminating barriers to services and filling gaps in the community.

“A kid going hungry or not having access to healthcare is not something we should see in our community.”

Chris says that the work of Inland SoCal United Way and 211+ ensures that those communities with the most significant barriers have opportunities with equity across all sectors. Equity for education, financial stability, health, and housing. Everyone should have access to the things they need.

211 collects and disseminates data that is important in community planning. It can identify needs or barriers in the community where no data exists and, if used effectively, can help build a more resilient and well-rounded community. It can help identify food deserts and the need for basic housing. It provides data on the percentage of the population in greatest need. On a systems-change level, 211 data can assist policymakers in identifying where resources should be used to meet the needs of residents.

When not working, Chris has a passion for helping youth. He volunteers at his church in Riverside, supporting the youth department. He helps youth through mental health support, food insecurity, and other issues they may have. Additionally, he has volunteered in different ministries, including homeless support and outreach. He is a family man, and building a more resilient community means all children, including his own, have a healthy future.
