A message from our President
Lisa Wright, M.Div., CFRE
Hello Friends,

The last two years have been challenging for so many. Still, we are so grateful for the team and partners who have helped us continue to positively impact the lives of our community.

From housing to food insecurity to rental assistance, it has been our highest priority to ensure that we create bridges and collaborate to help those most in need.
We recently celebrated our 90th Anniversary with a gala themed “Imagining Tomorrow’s World, Today.” The gala was not only a celebration of 90 years of accomplishments, it was also a recommitting of ourselves to our mission while underlining our work in which we hope to imagine tomorrow’s world. It is essential that we honor our work by continuously envisioning our future, including centering our community.

We are excited to share that we are in the final stages of creating our new strategic plan. Our vision for the future includes alignment of programs and funding towards the purpose of building generational wealth for all; especially those in our community who have been historically marginalized and left behind. It isn’t enough to just go back to normal; United Way’s mission now and for the next 90 years is to empower our community to improve lives for all. We hope you will continue to stand with us and fight for the education, financial stability, health, and housing for all.

Thank you to our supporters, partners, staff, and volunteers who work passionately to support hundreds of thousands of clients every year. Here is to another 90 years of support to the Inland Southern California region.

Thank you for all that you do,
Lisa

LIVE UNITED PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
Inland SoCal Crisis and Suicide Helpline (available 24/7 by calling 951-686-HELP) is a crisis intervention service to prevent suicide and deescalate emotional distress serving Riverside County.
CALL SAMPLES FROM THE HELPLINE
Young Teen and Self-Harm: Rhiannon, a young teenager, called Helpline because she was coping with parental conflict. She was experiencing panic attacks and self-harm. Rhiannon felt the urge to self-harm again, but instead chose to call Helpline. Our crisis counselor provided emotional support, assessed for suicide risk, and built a safety plan. Rhiannon planned to address the episode with her therapist and psychiatrist later that week.
Retired Veteran: Leon is a retired veteran struggling with grief after the loss of his spouse. He called us with feelings of loneliness and depression. Finding no risks, our crisis counselor instead offered referrals to Leon and provided emotional support for the grief experience.
LIVE UNITED STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Meet Jenn Carson, Crisis Line Supervisor
Jenn Carson Crisis Helpline Supervisor with Inland SoCal 211+. The Crisis and Suicide Helpline (951-686-HELP) is one of the oldest suicide hotlines on the West Coast and provides services in Riverside County, CA. Founded in 1968 by the Riverside United Fund and the Volunteer Bureau of Riverside, it was merged into Inland SoCal 211+ in fall 2019.
The Helpline is an anonymous and confidential service that provides emotional support, crisis intervention, and suicide prevention. There are about 40 crisis line team members made up of staff, volunteers, and social work interns from local universities. Jenn supervises and supports the crisis counselors, oversees the internship program, and provides community training, such as ASIST (Suicide First Aid) and Mental Health First Aid.

After graduating from Moreno Valley High School, Jenn received her bachelor’s degree from Baylor University, and a master’s in Counseling degree from George Washington University. She is currently completing her doctorate in Social Work at California Baptist University, where she also serves as an adjunct professor.

Jenn shares that many suicide prevention professionals have lived experience with suicide loss, suicidal ideation, or suicide attempts. She is a survivor of childhood trauma and a childhood suicide attempt. She said, “While suicide is the 10th leading cause of death, it doesn’t need to be. Suicide can be prevented with help and hope. At the Inland SoCal Crisis Line, we provide that help and hope around the clock.” Jenn serves as a board member for the American Association of Suicidology to further the work of suicide prevention professionals.

When not working, Jenn loves to travel, having been to Canada, Mexico, Scotland, England, France, and over 40 U.S. States. Additionally, she loves mystery novels, classic movies, musical theater, and spending time with her family, friends, and cats. Most recently, she has been on a wellness journey, losing 100 pounds, which has allowed her to go kayaking, swimming, and hiking.

Jenn demonstrates what it means to Live United, supporting the Inland SoCal communities and impacting lives one interaction at a time!
