May 7, 2026
The sweep of the Easter cycle continues with the anticipation of the JOY in the power of the Holy Spirit given at Pentecost, the final Sunday of Easter, May 24. In the meantime, as we prepare for the Day of Pentecost, we have much to celebrate.
The focus this week, the sixth Sunday of Easter is the anticipation of the Ascension of Jesus. The Gospel lesson this week recalls the promises of Jesus. The disciples remain confused, puzzled, and fearful over Jesus’ announcement that he is going to leave them physically to complete the act of the Resurrection and return to his Father. They still need comfort and direction. The assurance he offers is the promise of the gift of the “Advocate,” the “Paraclete,” a helper – The Holy Spirit, who will be with them forever and will remind them of all that Jesus has said and done. Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus comes to abide with his disciples of every generation including us.
This Sunday is also Mother’s Day and provides an opportunity to honor mothers, grandmothers, mentors, and mother figures. We are grateful for their sowing seeds of faith, encouragement, and compassion in our hearts, lives, and homes. We give thanks for those who echo the selfless love of God and have blessed and continue to bless children in their lives with love, faith, and strength. May the “example of their faith and love shine forth… and that we… may honor them always with a spirit of respect.” (UMBOW)
