This Sunday is Father’s Day, which officially became a national holiday in 1972. There will be many celebrations and expressions of deep gratitude honoring fathers, father-figures, and paternal bonds of those who have shaped and continue to shape our lives. Fatherhood and spiritual mentorship are about building firm foundations of faith, love, integrity, and grace so that the next generations stand firmly and build upon them. Thank you for the sacrifices made, prayers offered, and foundations built. May you continue to be blessed this Father’s Day weekend as God continues to build legacies of grace.
While John Wesley is often referred to as the “father of Methodism,” he and his biological father, the Reverend Samuel Wesley, are not directly related to the founding of the holiday. However, they do share a famous historical event that is frequently celebrated during this time.
On Sunday, June 6, 1742, John Wesley visited his childhood hometown of Epworth, where his father had served as the local Anglican pastor for decades. Samuel Wesley had planted seeds of faith through scripture, discipline, and devotion in his home, and along with his spouse, Susanna, built a foundation on which their children grew as both parents deeply shaped the Wesley children. John Wesley, the fifteenth of nineteen children born to Samuel and Susanna Wesley, became an Anglican priest. During that visit in 1742, he used his father’s gravestone in the churchyard as a pulpit to preach to thousands of people. This style of preaching became known as “open-air preaching.”
The faith, prayers, and lessons of one generation become the foundation for the next. Thank you to all who live out your faith, increase true joy in families, and sustain, support, and shape current and future generations.
Fun Fact: John Wesley, the “father of Methodism,” was born on June 28, 1703. The 323rd anniversary of his birthday falls on a Sunday this year.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL begins Monday, June 22 and runs through Thursday, June 25 in the Family Life Center, 5:30 PM – 8 PM (Pre-K concludes at 7 PM).
CHILDREN’S BOOK DRIVE – in partnership with Horry County Summer Reading Camp and The Shepherd’s Table in Conway will run June 22 – June 25. Collection bins will be made available in the Family Life Center.

UNITED METHODIST MEN – will meet Monday, June 29 at 6 PM in the Family Life Center. The speaker will be Kelly Thorvalson, Senior Manager of the South Carolina Aquarium, with information about the turtle hospital and the impact of plastics on the environment. BELIN MEMORIAL UMC CHANCEL CHOIR presents “Of Thee We Sing” – a FREE concert on Thursday, July 2 at 7 PM in the sanctuary, celebrating the 250th birthday of America. Come dressed in your red, white, and blue and sing along to the patriotic favorites.
