Pastor's Notes
from the desk of Will Malambri:

I know it doesn’t seem like it, but I really am trying to learn your names. The name tags help (thank you for wearing them), the old directory is a help (and thank you for being part of the new one!), but what helps me most are the one-on-one or small group interactions some of us have had. I’ll keep working at it, and I’ll continue to appreciate your patience with me.

I’m working at it because names are important. Names say something about the person/s who gave the name and being known by name says something to the one named.

God seems to care a lot about names and we learn more about who God is from God’s naming or renaming people. God sees in us what we might not see in ourselves and God can redirect our lives using that knowledge. Prominent examples include Abram (which means “exalted father” – maybe his mother had a premonition) being renamed Abraham (which means “father of a multitude” – God knows what was coming), Jacob being renamed Israel (“strives with God”), Naomi renaming herself Mara (“bitter”) after the death of her husband and two sons, then being restored to Naomi (“my pleasantness”) before the end of the story of Ruth. In the New Testament, Simon becomes Peter (“the rock”) and Saul becomes Paul.

The prophet Hosea – there’s a name we don’t come across very often anymore, perhaps we should since it means “God has saved” – demonstrates God’s character through the name changes shared in chapter 1. Angry at Israel’s disobedience, God orders Hosea to have children and name them Jezreel (“God plants,” as in God plants destruction), Lo-ruhamah (“not pitied”), and Lo-ammi (“not my people”). Can there be more devastating names given by the Father than Plants Destruction, Not Pitied, and Not My People?

Thankfully before the names have even hung in the air, God restores them:  Yet the number of the people of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which can be neither measured nor numbered; and in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” it shall be said to them, “Children of the living God”  (Hosea 1:10).

As Hosea (“God has saved”) shows from the start and throughout his prophecy, God’s nature is that of redeeming, reclaiming, and restoring God’s children. As a sign of this Parental love, God knows us by name. “ Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine, ” God tells us through Isaiah (43:1). Incredible – the Creator of all that is, who sometimes changes our names, always knows us by name.

I wrote earlier that being known by name says something to the one named. Think of God’s message to you: you are known by name. That is a message worth hearing and a confidence worth having (even if I’m still struggling to get your name down).

Known and Trying to Know,
Will
