Introducing Generative AI

Welcome to... Innovation Insight!


Generative AI is a game-changing technology that is shaping new business strategies and revolutionizing educational methodologies. Generative AI is a broad term that can be used for any AI system whose primary function is to generate content. This is in contrast to AI systems that perform other functions, such as classifying data (e.g., assigning labels to images), grouping data (e.g., identifying customer segments with similar purchasing behavior), or choosing actions (e.g., steering autonomous vehicles).

Large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, specialize in understanding and creating human-like text. They are a type of generative AI system that focuses on generating text content and are impressive as they can produce text akin to human writing and tailored to a specific audience. Generative AI refers to a broad category of AI systems that generate content, while LLMs are a specific type of generative AI system that generates text content. In addition to LLM’s that produce text, widely used generative AI models generate images, human-sounding speech, video, music, and computer code.

Generative AI has the potential to play a crucial role in teaching and learning. We have found some interesting examples which include faculty members who have:


  • Created syllabi, lecture materials, examples, and cases using generative AI
  • Developed quiz and exam questions using generative AI, possibly tailored to individual student needs
  • Explored the potential for generative AI to act as a tutor
  • Assigned students to work in groups to analyze the accuracy of generative AI responses
  • Created generative AI prompts for students to simulate interviews for a specific job type
  • Encouraged students to draft content to help them improve their writing skills and produce more engaging content
  • Created assignments for students to test programs written by generative AI (e.g., in Python)

Generative AI is an exciting field with vast potential. In exploring its capabilities, we must do so responsibly as we leverage teaching and learning to enhance our students’ educational experience.

ChatGPT 3.5

ChatGPT 3.5 logo

Free. Not connected to Internet. Sometimes at capacity and thus not accessible. Unaware of events since late 2021. Does not do math. Does not provide sources for its responses.

ChatGPT 4

ChatGPT 4 logo

Paid “Plus” subscription required. Slower than 3.5 but more accurate and better at math. “Default” mode is not connected to the Internet, is unaware of events since late 2021, and does not provide sources. When using new Bing plugin, ChatGPT-4 is connected to Internet and provides sources.

Microsoft Bing

Microsoft Bing logo

Free. Connected to Internet. Microsoft Edge browser and Microsoft account required. Uses GPT-4. Three conversation styles (creative, balanced, precise) have varying levels of accuracy and consistency. Has more visual features. Provides sources for its responses.

Google Bard

Google Bard logo

Free. Unlimited responses. Faster than other free systems but may not be as accurate. Requires non-W&M Google account as Workspace @email.wm.edu accounts are not supported. Rarely provides sources.
