Message from the Provost

At Georgia Southern University, discovery doesn’t stay in the lab, the classroom, or the studio—it ripples outward, shaping communities, industries, and futures.

This fall, our stories capture that spirit. A professor is harnessing artificial intelligence to sharpen the way we see proteins—accelerating biomedical breakthroughs. Engineering students are working hand-in-hand with NASA to design technology for deep-space missions. A fashion merchandising senior returned from Tyler Perry Studios with both confidence and a vision for a new creative collective. Coastal post-baccalaureate researchers are wading into tidal mud and cultural traditions to study sustainability firsthand. And through an NSF-funded ENERGY program, we’re carrying renewable energy innovation straight into Georgia’s classrooms.

Each of these achievements reflects more than individual success—they embody our commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, transformative student success, and research that sparks real-world impact. They also bring to life our priorities: preparing students for what’s next, creating hands-on opportunities, and ensuring every graduate leaves ready to lead and serve.

That same drive for innovation extends beyond our campuses. In September, I traveled abroad to strengthen Georgia Southern’s global partnerships—meeting with leadership at Kingston University and the University of Greenwich in London, and joining our team at the Wexford campus in Ireland for the groundbreaking of Adoration Convent, which will provide new housing and expanded opportunities for our students abroad. These international collaborations underscore our growing reputation as a university that connects local excellence to global engagement.

Closer to home, I was honored to speak on a panel at the Engaged Management Scholarship Conference in Los Angeles, where I joined scholars and practitioners exploring how applied research fuels business and community transformation. I also attended the first Georgia One Health Symposium, hosted by our Institute for Health Logistics & Analytics, where interdisciplinary teams examined the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health. Both events showcased how Georgia Southern continues to lead conversations that bridge disciplines and drive solutions for our region and beyond.

Georgia Southern is soaring because our people—students, faculty, and staff—are bringing bold vision to action. Whether pushing the boundaries of science, amplifying culture, or lifting communities, our collective work proves that when innovation serves humanity, it has no limits.

GS professor awarded NSF grant to advance protein imaging research

What if we could peer deeper into the proteins that shape life—and disease? Georgia Southern computer science professor Dr. Yujia Sun is stepping into that frontier with a new $175,000 NSF grant. His work uses deep learning to sharpen cryo-EM images, helping scientists more clearly see the alpha-helix and beta-sheet structures that hold the keys to understanding illnesses. But this isn’t just lab work—it’s a chance for students to dive into discovery and for Georgia Southern to spark new biomedical breakthroughs. The project is proof that big science can start right here at home.

GS students partner with NASA to develop tech for deep-space missions

What if your senior design project powered the next generation of space exploration? At Georgia Southern, mechanical engineering students are doing just that. Under the leadership of Dr. Valentin Soloiu, the team won a spot among 12 universities in NASA’s M2M X-Hab 2026 challenge — and they’re designing a rover and wireless charging station to support deep-space missions.

GS post-baccalaureate program helps next generation of coastal scientists wade into research

Her boots sank into marsh mud as Amanda Melendez and nine fellow scientists ventured beyond textbooks—unloading oyster cages, casting light traps, and surveying coastal tributaries. They are Georgia Southern’s first cohort in the RaMP post-baccalaureate program, designed to pull new grads into real coastal research.

Fashion Merchandising student tailors her future following Tyler Perry Studios internship

When Laila Ward stepped onto the Tyler Perry Studios lot, she couldn’t help but marvel: “I’m really here.” A Georgia Southern senior in fashion merchandising and apparel design, she was one of just 14 interns chosen from 1,900 hopefuls. Her summer role? Costume production assistant—coordinating wardrobes, maintaining logistics across sprawling sets—and, in a surprise twist, producing a 10-minute short film under tight deadlines.
