ANNOUNCEMENTS
This week we will be looking at novel products that are not mainstream yet, and have the potential to be purchased by a larger player in the market. Last week we had a good enough response from the GET MORE INFO button that we will role them back for this week.
**SPOILER ALERT** At the time of writing this edition, Paragon28 has announced they have acquired one of the featured products in today’s newsletter.

“I've been receiving your emails for a bit. I find them interesting. Who edits your content and what are their professional background and qualifications? disclosures? I cannot seem to find it on the website”
- DO in Lansing, MI
FAN Response
You emailed me three times with the same question, so I will answer.
We are just a few people who have been in the industry for too long, who enjoy the innovation of the foot and ankle market. We are not doctors; we do not have any financial disclosures, and our only editor is spell check.
In terms of content, we report on what is interesting to us. Looking back at previous newsletters it seems fairly balanced, but of course I'm biased. To be honest, we have no plan other than to continue to put out semi-readable content on a weekly basis as long as people keep reading.
To date, we have not accepted a penny for the newsletter from anyone. We have been approached by several organizations and will possibly monetize at some point in the future. We will be very transparent in all our paid marketing efforts and we hope our FAN's will support those sponsors if and when the time comes.
Thanks

LITTLE GUYS with BIG IDEAS
How about a shout out to some of the up and comers in the foot and ankle game? Innovation is not dead.
FAN is here to help raise awareness for all foot and ankle companies, big and small. Here are a few products/companies that do not have the marketing budget of the big boys, but they are out there hustling, trying to make a name for themselves and hopefully a few dollars as well!

AVITUS - 6mm Bone Graft Harvester
A wise surgeon once said, “Sometimes I do not need to bring a bazooka to a knife fight” in speaking about when to use high-cost biologic products such as Infuse, Augment, Bio4, and Trinity Elite. That is where the Avitus Bone Graft Harvester may fit in.
Avitus offers a novel device that hooks up to suction which allows for reproducible autograft harvesting at a fraction of the cost of some of the aforementioned products. The new 6mm harvester is designed for lower volume, MIS harvests of the calc and distal tibia. This product is targeted for use in extremity surgery and will most likely make your OR coordinators happier if it becomes an alternative for some cases that may not fit into the 'train wreck' category. For the last few years, I have seen the Avitus guys hustling all over, from show to show, big and small. I hope this device takes off and these guys get paid for a job well done.

DISIOR – Foot and Ankle Software
Disior offers a unique look into patient specific data gather from CT imaging. It measures a variety of angles, joint differential to the contralateral side, and can potentially lay out a plan of treatment for the patient. As mentioned, this company was scooped up by Paragon28 yesterday afternoon for a cool 26 million! Paragon looks to be putting together a tool called SMART28 to further help surgeons with preoperative planning outside of total ankle PSI.
In researching Disior over the past couple days, I noticed that RESTOR3D (also featured later in this newsletter) is a user of their technology according to their website. Did Paragon get some very cool new technology and potentially cripple their new 3D competitor by acquiring their design software? We will find out soon, but for now how about a congrats to the DISIOR team and continued success in the future.
Here is the press release and below is a quote from Albert DeCosta, CEO of Paragon28:
"Disior advances our previously communicated growth strategy to target unique technologies and will immediately accelerate our internal research and development efforts, plus provide surgeons unique pre-operative planning capabilities. Disior’s software combined with our broad product portfolio further differentiates us from the competition," said Albert DaCosta, Chairman and CEO of P28. "P28’s ultimate mission is to improve patient outcomes, and we believe our SMART 28™ ecosystem will modernize all aspects of foot and ankle surgery.”

The S-Core Implant received FDA approval in the summer of 2020 and is indicated for use in all areas of the body for repair of osteochondral defects. We will focus on its foot and ankle applications for the MTP and talus. OCD’s are a tough problem that can be treated while in a varieties of ways including microfracture, interpositional arthroplasty, or an OATS procedure.
The S-CORE is a screw-in, fenestrated device that is designed to be used in conjunction with dermal allograft. The HA coated, titanium implant is designed for ingrowth with bone preservation, potentially adding to the long term survivability of the implant. I have to say I find this product to be very interesting and depending on how it performs in the knee could be an easy acquisition for a big time ortho player down the road.
- Fenestration's allow marrow access and bleeding
- Patented chamber design provides structural support and preserves bone
- Sizes range from 4mm to 10mm
- Titanium, plasma HA coated for bone in growth
- Ability to attach dermal allograft, minced cartilage

METALOGIX – Revolution External Plating System
Metalogix is asking surgeon to “think outside of the circle” with its posterior open frame design. The frame offer an interesting twist to traditional circular ex-fix, giving surgeons some additional versatility with equivalent strength when compared to its competitors. Here are some of the features and benefits from the website:
- Innovative design allows for strength AND comfort
- Patented first open posterior external fixation system design
- Better limb access for surgeon and hospital staff
- Reduces swelling complications
- Allows the use of smaller plates for more stability
- Rapid assembly due to speed components

and Custom 3D Implants
Restor3d has taken over as the go independent for custom 3D printed implants in the foot and ankle space. Paragon28 acquired the market leader, Additive Orthopedics late last year leaving the door open for a newcomer. Restore stepped in as an alternative provider for total talus implants. One reason a new provider was needed, is because total talus implants are often used in conjunction with a tibial components from STAR, Infinity, or Inbone. It was assumed, that Paragon28 would no longer make competitive customs.
In addition to total talus implants, Restor3d also creates revision solutions for foot and ankle reconstructions including cage implants for failed tar, navicular replacements, and other forefoot applications as well. Restor3d is based out of Duke and has many ties to the team that created the technology for MedShape that was recently sold to DJO. Restor3d recently joined forces with Brian Garvey and have added the Kinos total ankle to their bag. We will get in depth on the Kinos at some point, but we expect big things to come out of Durham, North Carolina in the next few years.
