Leadership in Vet Rehab: A Look Back at the STAAR Panel ... and A Step Forward

The recent Panel Discussion at STAAR Conference (sponsored by Paw Prosper) brought together pioneering veterinarians and physical therapists for a long-overdue and candid discussion about the future of veterinary rehabilitation. As this field continues to grow, it still faces critical questions, chief among them, how best to integrate physical therapists into the broader veterinary landscape. While the Panelists brought differing perspectives, the most valuable outcome was a clearer understanding of one another's viewpoints, concerns, and professional roles. The discussion wasn't always easy and Panelists' viewpoints sometimes clashed. There were moments of palpable discomfort but it was this very discomfort that signaled real growth. I was impressed by their willingness to engage constructively, find common ground, and stay focused on what unites us all: improving the lives of animals and the people who care for them. To that end, we at STAAR extend a heartfelt thank you to the Panelists who helped initiate this critical dialogue.

The Panel's ongoing pursuit to collaborate prompted them to take the next step and form a working committee that meets quarterly to continue the conversation and ensure tangible progress. These meetings can become the foundation for lasting change, and we look forward to hearing updates and progress at next year's STAAR Conference.

We encourage this Leadership Panel to continue expanding the circle of collaboration by including veterinary technicians and other allied professionals whose voices and expertise are vital to the future of integrative care. Let’s keep the momentum going. Let’s continue learning from one another. Let’s stay united by our shared purpose. Together, we can advance our profession and deliver even better care for the patients and families who depend on us.

With deep appreciation for all of you,

Ilaria Borghese, CEO, Co-Founder, STAAR Conference & Vital Vet

Innovations in Veterinary Orthotics and Prosthetics: Reaching Beyond Traditional Boundaries

Veterinary medicine is on the move—literally and figuratively. Staying current with these innovations ensures we provide our patients with every opportunity to live full, functional lives.

Veterinary orthotics and prosthetics (VOP) are rapidly evolving and no longer limited to limb supports nor exclusive to canine patients. Today’s orthotic and prosthetic solutions are being used to address complex orthopedic, neurologic, and post-surgical conditions across various animals, including cats, goats, horses, and even exotic species. These tools are enhancing mobility, supporting healing, and dramatically improving quality of life for animals that were once considered out of options.

More R&D is needed but for now, explore these resources:
