Thank You!

Thanks to our generous members, our Annual Meeting successfully raised an impressive amount for the Diversity Fund and during the Annual Auction.

Auction Earnings: $11,965.71
Diversity Fund Donations: $2,180 (raised through t-shirt sales at the Conference)
The 2019 Annual Meeting of the Mycological Society of America was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, August 10 –14. Highlights of the meeting included two workshops, focused on the developing North American Mycoflora and bioinformatics pipelines found in deCIFR, the Foray (with a slight "bus disaster"), a volunteer reception at the new Bell Museum of Natural History, and as always, a fun and interesting Auction and Social, which closed out the Meeting on August 14. Local organizer Georgiana May (U. Minnesota) thanks the many, many volunteers who made this meeting possible and enjoyable. To name just a few; Marin Brewer (EVP) and the MSA Council provided feedback and organization throughout, Nhu Nugyen led the Foray, Corby Kistler put together a fantastic history of science display for the Bell Museum event, and Mary Berbee (Endowments Chair) took on the Herculean task of organizing the t-shirt sales and over 300 auction items (with assistance from many graduate student volunteers). Dave Gieser, ably assisted by Cathy Aime, served as live auctioneer, enabling a rich return on select items.

Book Reviews
Review submitted by Nathan Smith , Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK.

Fungi in Polar Regions. 2019. Masaharu Tsuji and Tamotsu Hoshino (eds.). CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group, 6000 Broken Sound Parkway NW, Suite 300, Boca Raton, FL 33487-2742, https://www.crcpress.com/ . ISBN:978-1-138-08970-9. 146 PP. Price: $151.96

Mycology is often characterised as a neglected discipline. For extreme areas, such as the polar regions, this is particularly true; where specialist techniques and harsh, inaccessible environments limit the amateur involvement on which much of mycology depends (for a historical perspective, see Watling, 1998). As such, the release of any new book on the subject is an applaudable....

Ascomycete Fungi of North America. A Mushroom Reference Guide. 2014. Michael W. Beug, Alan E. Bessette, Arlene R. Bessette. University of Texas Press, Austin,TX. http://utpress.utexas.edu/ . ISBN: 978-0-292-75452-2 (cloth:alk. paper). Printed in China. 488 pp. Price (hard cover) $85.

The authors of this “reference guide” to the Ascomycetes, particularly the macro species, bring fine credentials to the task. Mike (as he is widely called) Beug comes recently retired from a distinguished career as professor of botany and specialist in mycology at Evergreen State College at Olympia, Washington, and has long been active with mycological societies as a participant and teacher. In Memoriam: Cardy Raper
As Inoculum went to press, the editors learned of Cardy Raper’s death. We include a few short sentences from Nancy Keller (Robert L. Metzenberg and Kenneth B. Raper Professor of Mycology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison) about Cardy: ”Carlene "Cardy" Raper, a beloved and renown mycologist, passed at age 94 on 5 Sept 2019. Cardy, one of the first female mycologists, spanned a career from classical Mendelian genetics to the molecular characterization of  Schizophyllum commune  mating types. Her scientific contributions, social acumen, and love for life are also brilliantly portrayed in her 2013 book, "A Woman of Science: An Extraordinary Journey of Love, Discovery, and the Sex Life of Mushrooms”.

We also point our community to a hilarious interview published by a local Vermont newspaper… if you didn’t know Cardy, this interview will make clear why you would have enjoyed talking with her: https://www.sevendaysvt.com/vermont/mycologist-cardy-raper-talks-love-fungi-sex-and-cardi-b/Content?oid=25558373 . If you’re out tonight, please drink a martini in Carly’s honor. We think she would have loved that kind of tribute!
In Memoriam: Charles L. "Bud" Kramer
April 4, 1928 - June 26, 2019
Written by Jose Herrera, August 11, 2019

Charles L. Kramer, known to his friends as “Bud,” died in Manhattan, Kansas, on June, 26, 2019. Born in Leavenworth, Kansas, Bud worked at Western Illinois University for one year before being hired by Kansas State University, where he spent his entire career characterizing the seasonality and vertical distribution of airspora, with particular interest in wheat rust fungi in the Great Plains. Bud earned his Ph.D. in 1957 at the University of Kansas under the tutelage of A.J. Mix while working with the order Taphrinales. Bud retired from KSU as Professor emeritus in 1998. Toward the end of his career, Bud established the Charles L. Kramer Mentor Student Travel Award within the Mycological Society of America—an award that continues to defray the travel expenses of early-career mycology students. Additionally, and since 1963, Bud and his family also were passionately involved in dog agility and dog training. In 1988, he and his wife, Vel, established the first organized dog agility program in the United States as well as establishing Rally Obedience in 2000, a novel way to integrate multiple breeds into dog agility. The sport allowed for multiple dog breeds to participate in the sport of dog agility. Throughout his career, Bud had over 20 graduate students who are now contributing in various academic and non-academic settings, and he will be remembered as a kind, generous, wise, and patient mentor.

To increase membership and involvement in the MSA, it is important to recommend the Society to amateur and professional colleagues, and particularly to students and postdoctoral associates who are interested in fungi. MSA members include pathologists, geneticists, systematists, ecologists, and those people who just want to know more about the fascinating world of fungi.

Please help us get the word out! Signing up is easy by following the links on the membership page ( https://msafungi.org/join-or-renew/ ). Please feel free to contact our MSA Membership Coordinator, Cori VanGalder, at msafungi@reesgroupinc.com if you have questions about renewing or new memberships.
